Scott,
Took the family crabbing Sat. 10/27 at Windy bay. We crabbed the incoming until just after slack and ended up 8 nice big eaters. . We moved around a lot, it seem like the crab were constantly on the move. We went through a lot of chicken feeding the youngsters but it was worth the effort.  More sunshine will hopefully make it better.

Thanks for all the great site,

Scott,
Kirk Toy here the report from Roy Tann is really Ryan Toy! I think he needs to work on spelling or use Spell Check. The Report is that we fished from the log at deans creek to the first bend at the Hinsdale's old property in 10 to 15' of water using Spinners. We have hooked and landed 4 Chinook and 9 Coho with 3 being Fin clipped. Also worked the Smith up river waiting for the wind to lay down and had 5 take downs. They just would not stick! I hope this helps all of you and Thank You for a great site. I look at it daily!

As you can tell from the lack of fresh reports the past few days, fishing has slowed down some as we move further along into fall. I have had a spattering of emails from folks who have been out but not had a great deal of successes to share with us. The Umpqua has been fairly quite as of late, while the Siuslaw continues to be fairly busy with fall fishing activity, however the number of salmon being taken are few in comparison to the number of boats fishing for the them.

Tyler Grimmett took a 45lb Chinook on Friday October 6th. He was fishing with our friend George on the Yaqina River out of Toledo

Brett Grimmett

Hey there Tyler, that is one dandy Chinook you hooked up with. You don't see a whole bunch of 45 pounder's find their way into the net every year. This one will go in book of memories that you can share with your friends and family for many years to come.

Hi Scott,
Noticed reports are a little slow so I thought you might like to know about these lucky anglers from Bend who fished with me out of Reedsport this weekend. They managed to hook over 40 fish and landed 27 we even found several fin clips some of them were rather large. As you can see Sat. was a nicer day than Sun. Tried to catch up with these fish on Monday upriver in the Elkton area on Monday but only managed 4 wilds. Also stopped by the viewing window today at Winchester on the North Umpqua and it is jam packed with Silvers, Chinook &Steelhead oh my! and 95% of them are fin-clipped! All fish were caught on spinners and plugs.  Hope this helps some other anglers out there.   ahh  If only it could stay October year round.

Take care,
Todd Harrington   <><

Hi Todd, "reports are a little slow" is an understatement, they have really slowed down the past week. Your right, this kind of news could prompt folks to hook up the boat and head back out on the river to give it another try. That's fishing, some days it's hot and some days it's not. You can't complain about not catching fish if you didn't go.  One thing that is starting to show as a common theme as of late is that most are being taken on spinners and plugs. Thanks for sending the report and the photo for the gallery.

Hi Scott,
Two salmon were caught by my dad Jerry L'italien one clip fin and one wild Coho between 20 and 22 in 14 feet of water on a flo-go spinner. (wild Coho released) Two clip fin Coho's caught by Jeanneane in Gardener in 17feet of water with a spinner.  We were real happy with our day of fishing and catching and will be back for more. We will be back again next year from Sacramento, California.

Jeanneane Crabb

It looks like a family affair going on down there. I'm glad you folks left a few behind for the rest of us. I'm genuinely glad that you folks managed to take a few fish home with you this year. It's been a tough one and everyone has had to work pretty hard for their fish. Next year could be a record breaker, you never know till it gets here.  Happy trails until we hear from you again!

Hello Scott, we fished hard Saturday 10/7 and got this one around 12:30. Weighed in at 26lbs. This fish took off like a silver bullet the engineer handled it like a champ. It was his first salmon, you should have heard his running commentary while fighting this fish, he sounded like a sportscaster. I do believe he will be back for more.

Fish On!

Jeff, Dave and Tom (the engineer)

Sounds like you guys had a pretty good time out there. Tell him congratulations on a job well done. You'll have to take the video camera along next time and film the entire episode, we will stay tuned for his second Salmon.

Scott,
Andy and I fished the Siuslaw River on Saturday and Sunday and Andy caught this one around noon on Saturday. The fish was 39.5" long, again, sorry no weight. The fish and Wildlife officers claim that there were 75 fish landed on Saturday. The fish are in... maybe. Take care.

Omar and Andy

Hi there Omar and Andy, looks like you guys are doing pretty good with the salmon chasing this fall. There are more fish being reported caught ever day on the Siuslaw but you know how it works, you always get there the day after it was really good :). The Siuslaw produces some really nice fish ever year and it seems like they are starting to catch them all up down the river between Florence and Mapleton. I don't know how much longer it will last but enjoy while you can.

Hi Scott, we are having a lot of problems catching salmon so we went sturgeon fishing on the umpqua river today. My friend Gary caught this beauty this morning on sand shrimp, it measured 59" long. We only had the one bite, but it was the right fish. Good fishing to you.

Tracy Williams

Hey Tracy, looks like you had the better idea. The salmon fishing is off and on again, isn't it wonderful to have so many great fishing opportunities here on the coast ? That is one great looking sturgeon, I just polished off a package of smoked sturgeon this afternoon, it's great stuff. Sturgeon fishing takes allot of patients but when you hook up, it's usually allot of fun.

Hi Scott,

Fished the Siuslaw with Family on 10-1 and caught this 22 lb Chinook. Great fight. This is the first big fish my kids have seen they were crying and telling me to throw it back, and that they don't like that fish. Needless to say it is filleted and in the freezer.
On 10-8 I took some friends from work and we hooked into this 26lb chromer. Ever better fight. Only bite all day. The Siuslaw sure has been slow this year. Lots of boats in the water and not much action.

Scott  Touchette

Hello Scott, nice first name ;) . Looks like you had a little better luck than some this fall. The fishing has not been as hot as it has been in some of the more recent falls in memory, but fish are being taken, you just have to put in more time and energy to get to them.  That was a pretty funny story with the kids, it must be pretty intimidating to see a fish as big as you are coming in the boat. I don't know if I would want to pull a fish as big as I am in the boat either.

Hi Scott.
The wife Pat and I hit the Umpqua this morning . Beautiful day no Wind and no Fog all Sun We were fishing with spinners up by the elk view. Pat caught one Coho and I caught one Chinook This has not been the best year for salmon But as the ole saying goes that's fishing. We had fun. Caught enough for the smoker and a little for steaks. We will be back next year for sure. Bigger and better fish.

Jerry & Pat L'Italien

Hi Jerry, I hear you, as has been mentioned, some years we just have to work a little harder for our fish than others. Things were a little bit slower than usual this year but we have had years like this before and will again. The bright side is there are many more really great years than ones like this one has been. Thanks for sharing your fishing reports with us while you were here and I look forward to hearing more fishing stories from you and your family next year.  I hope you will visit our site often between now and then.

Hi Scott, took a break from salmon fishing on Friday and went to the Columbia and caught these 2 nice Sturgeon. Will be back on the Siuslaw next week. Take care, Bob www.stockdallsfishing.com .

Hello Bob, it's been pretty busy on the Siuslaw while you were gone, I don't know how many fish they are catching but there have been a bunch of boats out there working it. Looks like you did well to take a break and go chase some sturgeon for a day or two. The salmon will still be here when you get back. :).  Couple of satisfied customers and nice looking sturgeon, must have good a day.

Fished the Siuslaw today with my Dad (Ed) he got his first Siuslaw fall Chinook.
Fished from daylight till almost noon till he got this one. He said it was worth the wait.
Nick S.

Hi Nick, I'm with your dad on this one, it was worth the wait. We get a little spoiled having had some really productive seasons the past few years. I think everyone has had to work a little harder for their catch this year. That is a beautiful fish your dad took home with him and I'll bet he is munching down on some smoked salmon right now. There is nothing quite as good as some home made smoked salmon made from a fish you caught yourself.

Thanks Peter Davis   Redmond, Oregon

Hi Peter, thanks for sharing your report and pictures with us. It looks like Sully got you folks into plenty of good fishing on this trip. It is always nice to hear when folks are going home with an ice chest full of salmon. Hope you make it over our way again soon.

Hey Scott,

Drove my girlfriend out to the Siuslaw the other day where she landed this 30lb salmon.  Fishing has slowed down quite a bit.  Not sure why.  Haven't heard of any really good days on that river yet.  This is her first salmon and she reeled it in like a pro.  Had him whooped and he came into the net belly up!!!  Just how I like them!!

Good fishing,

 Steven

Hey there Steven, you must be pretty serious about this one, took her fishing? It's comforting to know that your girl can land a fish, now the real trick, can she cook it? Looks like you got a keeper there bud, the girl and fish! Thanks for the report and photo for our gallery.

Hi Scott and Larry  Well we had a great day out on the big pond today hooked over 18 fish before 9.00 am and managed to net 12 nice  Chinooks the ocean was like a lake and the sun was out ,and the fish were on the bite can you ask for anything more our customers were all smiles. Tight Lines  Captain Rick www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com

Woooo Hooo! what a difference a day makes huh? Man your customers had allot to smile about today with that haul. There is nothing quite as satisfying as heading home from a trip to the coast than a limit of salmon in the ice chest. Great Day, great weather, great ocean and great fishing, just doesn't get much better than that.

Scott,
Steve and I fished the Siuslaw all day Saturday and we caught one Chinook at 6:15pm (38" long< sorry no weight).  Slow and Hard fishing, but it paid off toward the end of the day.  We fished about a mile upriver from the port of Siuslaw boat launch.   Thanks for all your help.  See the attached picture.  I have another picture with no blood that I will try to send to you later.

Omar and Steve

Hi Omar and Steve, just a rough eyeball guesstimate would put that one at about 40lbs. You are right about it being slow this last weekend. I got a few emails from folks that worked it pretty hard and went home with an empty fish locker so count your blessings. The Siuslaw has always produced fewer fish than the Umpqua but the overall fish size taken from the Siuslaw tends to be larger. Fall is in the air but there is still plenty of days of good fishing ahead of us. If you can send along the other picture of your catch we will post it right along side of this one so everyone can see the before and after :). They have been some real lookers this year.

Hi Mike, haven't heard from you in awhile, glad to see you got over here and got in on some of the action at Windy Bay. Looks like your doing it right whatever your doing now all you need to do is let us all in on your secret...hahahaha! Thanks for the report and the pictures!

10/01/2006

Hi Scott,

Fished the Umpqua the last couple days with nothing to show for it so we decided to head for big pond today and found these two at more than 10 miles out.  Had them both on at the same time so it was a challenge getting them netted with only two people in the boat.  The ocean got rough so we called it quits early.
Tight lines
Huan & Deanna

H Huan & Deanna, looks like you were able to take something home to show for your time and fuel. I just got a report from Rick Mason this morning that said he did pretty good  out on the pond yesterday too.  It can be almost like a Laurel and Hardy movie watching two people hooked up at the same time. I guess you just get the littlest one aboard first so someone is freed up to bring the bigger one in and not try to manage a rod at the same time. I'm glad you headed in when the ocean started to rough up a little. I see some folks try to hang around out too long and get themselves into trouble trying to get back over the bar.

9-30-06  Hi guys  we made it out on the big pond again to the same spot we got them on the 29th  400ft  of water fishing down 127 ft  straight out from the entrance  and found these guys including  this 40 plus pounder  caught by  our return customer  Jim from Nevada  way to go Jim. bottom fishing starts tomorrow in the deep water we will fill you in on all the action . Tight Lines  Captain Rick www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com

Well it looks like you have them dialed in again at least for the time being, everyone's hand's look full, just the way you like to see them :). That 40lb'r really stands out, almost makes his other one look like a trout instead of a salmon. Thanks for the report Captain Rick, I'll bet a few of the folks head out over the bar if they are not doing to good on the river and follow your directions.
