Hi Scott,

I got tired of waiting for Spring Chinook to get hot, so I went halibut fishing with Randy last weekend out of Newport.  We caught limits both days, but the fishing was kind of difficult.  Ocean was like a washing machine on Saturday.

 Take Care,

Rod Lathrop

Hey there Rod, looks like you came up with a good alternative plan. Reports have been far and few between the past couple of weeks as you can plainly see. Sure appreciate you sending this one in. The weather was really nice today so I didn't get home till late and saw it in my email. Decided I better get it added before I hit the hay. Thanks and I hope you get lots of good days of fishing in this year.

Hey Jack, nice looking bunch of fish you and your guest have there. Always nice to see the Stripers, we don't get to many pictures of them each year. I hope your right things continuing to pick up through May and on in to June. Thanks for keeping us in mind and shooting the photos our way.

Thought I would send you a report from the big pond. Left the dock at 8:30, started fishing at about 9:15, found some fish on the surface and really whacked them. Limits for all. Lings and blacks. Crabbing was poor. Done by 11:00. It was a great day on the ocean, nice weather, fishing and a great crew.

Scott, Monty, Mark, Mike and TJ

Hey guys, thanks as always for the report. Nice to get some info on what is going on outside the bar now and then too. Looks like more nice days coming up as we get further along into spring. Sorry to hear the Crabbing wasn't a little better but will hope fully pick up some before long. Nice to hear from you and hope you have many more successful fishing trips this year.

Hi Scott,

Each year my youngest daughter requests a Father/Daughter Spring Fishing trip for her Birthday. We spent 4 days on the Umpqua in our boat last week for this years trip and this is one of the three fish Amanda boated. This fish weighed in at 43.3 pounds according to the official scales and crew at Springer Run. While the fishing was fairly slow and spotty overall we put 4 fish in the boat over the 4 days with two in the 20 pound range and one 9 pounder to go with the big fish. It was another great Birthday trip for us on the river.

Brad Hatley

Hi Brad, what a great feeling that must be that your daughter requested a few days fishing with her dad. I have always thought that was the best part of fishing was the time spent with friends and family. The fish we catch are just extra's. That is a beauty your daughter is holding up there. Thanks for sharing your report and your time with your daughter. I hope you two enjoy many more days on the river together over the years ahead.

Hello Scott,

My wife and I made the trip out to the Oregon coast from Butte, Montana to get in on the end of the deepwater lingcod season.  I fished March 30th and 31st out of Depoe Bay on the Charter Boat Kimberly Ann with Captain Richard.  The first day we fished shallow water for rockfish and lingcod with full limits of both for 6 people.  The top fish of the day was the 33” lingcod I caught in 135’ of water.  The next day being the last day of the deepwater season I went out with Captain Richard again to fish a deepwater reef at 575 feet deep.  We got limits of large lingcod for 4 people with the largest fish being my limit of 2 fish at 20.5 pounds and 22 pounds.  The next day we fished out of Brookings on a private boat with my friend John.  Even though it was 4/01/08, aka April Fools day, there was no fooling around just fishing!  We had nice seas and ran just north of Brookings over some great structure and managed to bring up limits of lingcod for 3 and several nice black seabass and one large Quillback!  This was the first time my wife had caught a lingcod and as you can see she was smiling!  You have a great site and thank you for your hard work.

 Sincerely,

 Jay Helfrich

Hello there Jay, was sure great to get your report. I grew up in eastern Oregon and then moved to Montana (Missoula area) where I lived for about 15 years. I made several treks back to the Oregon coast for some great fishing over those years and finally manage to move out here and live permanently. Thanks for your report and a little promo for the fishing charter is always good. We hope you can make it back out here again. I get a little home sick for Montana now and then, will be up there this summer for some fishing on the Big Hole River, one of my favorite places.

Hi Scott,

My Dad caught this springer today. He is 87 years young and he really is lucky to be in the boat. Hope more fish come his way. I just love him, and I enjoy fishing with him and my great friend Gary Cave. This fish was caught on the Umpqua river.

 Tracy Williams

Hi There Tracy, goes to show a son is never to old to go out fishing with his dad. How nice that your dad is still around and active enough to get out there and enjoy fishing the Umpqua with you. Hope you guys have a great season this year, and for as many more as life will allow. Thanks for sharing the day with us.

Hello Scott,

Took a trip down to the East Fork of the Coquille on the 4th of April. And it really turned out to be a great day. Water was perfect and the bite was on. I brought in 5 nice steelies, all wild though so they all got put back. The biggest was 40 inches long, not sure on the weight but a beast I must say. Took me about 20 minutes to get in on a river that's 25ft across haha. Had a great time, very sad that the run is about over.  You have a great site here and cant wait to show some good springer action from the Umpqua. Later.

Daniel Billick

Hey Daniel, you did have a great day, I posted the best 4 of 5 of your photos :) to keep things looking nice and neat. That is a great way to end a Steelhead season, I'll say that. This report will have folks drooling and wishing they had gotten out there if they hadn't already. Appreciate you thinking of us here at Fish-Works. Folks like yourself who send in their reports and photos are what make this place fun for others too. Thanks.

Hi Scott,

A few are trickling by.  Bryon Smith from Ten Down Lanes in Roseburg and Steve Tilley From Tilley Tree Service in Sutherlin shown here with a 20 pounder caught today near the Osprey boat landing above Tyee. That's three this week, all the same size and Fin Clipped.      The Blue Skunk

Hey guys thanks for the fishing report, it looks like the springers are on the move and that a few are making their way to the smoker. Glad to hear of your successes, it gives all of us motivation to get out there and chase them around. Reports have been a bit sparse this month but are picking up as we go along. I hope you have many successful days of fishing this year, please keep us posted.

Scott,

Another great day on the Columbia Monday morning.  We fished four guys, and by 9:00 AM we had 8 fish hooked, landed 6 and got to keep three.  If anyone wants to fish the Columbia River, I can be reached at 541-974-6567 or through my web page at www.finsandfeathersguides.com

Thanks

Craig "Gus" Augustynovich

Hi Craig, thanks for the picture and report, those are some nice looking Springers your guest have there. Glad to hear things are moving along steadily on the Columbia, I haven't been up that way in a while. I have heard the sturgeon fishing has been very productive up there this year as well. Hopefully we will start hearing a bit more from the Umpqua here before long as well. Keep up the great work up there, looks like inland salmon fishing may be pretty productive this year.

4/8/2008

Hi Scott,

I fished the North Umpqua today(Sunday 4-6-08) and landed two chrome native hens. Both were fooled by orange yarn balls with a spot of cerise and a very small clump of cured eggs. The water was perfect Steelhead green and the weather also cooperated. I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh the fish were this late in the winter season. They must have come in with the last storm; I’m not complaining though. I was by myself, so it was too hard to get myself in the picture.

Steve Vannucci

Hi Steve and thanks for thinking of all of us with your report and photos. We don't expect that most will come with a professional photographer in tow, we appreciate the fact that you took the time to take a picture and send it with. Dog gone it every time I think the steelhead run is over someone sends in another report and proves me wrong.

4/3/2008

Hello Scott,  Just thought I would let you know I am now booking Spring Chinook on both the Columbia and Umpqua.  I will be on The umpqua starting April 15th.  The fishing this winter for Sturgeon was great.  Here are a few pictures of a group up from Roseburg this last weekend.  They fished Springers on Friday and Sturgeon on Saturday.  I can be reached at 541-974-6563 or through my web page a www.finsandfeathersguides.com

Thanks
Craig "Gus"

Hello Craig and Gus and welcome back to fish-works, haven't heard from you in awhile, and again I would like to let everyone know that Fins and Feathers Guide Service are sponsors of our Fish-Works website. We are always happy to receive reports from guides and private fishermen alike. We of course want to give a little added shout out for our sponsors because they help to make this site possible for the rest of us. Those are some great looking fish your guest have there guys, it looks like things are warming up pretty fast on the water, time to start planning some fishing adventures on the Oregon coast. Thanks for thinking of us and keep us posted periodically on how your doing.

4/2/2008

Scott, Just a quick note to let you and your viewers know I am now booking Spring Chinook trips for April & May. Here is a picture of yesterdays ( 4-1-08) catch. Not a bad way to start the season off.
I can be reached at
Jack@jd-anglingadventures.com or my cell is 541-430-5422.  Thanks, Jack Duncan

Hello Jack, those are some fine looking Springers, what a fine way to start off the 2008 spring Chinook fishing season those are some beautiful fish. I got to thinking recently that the ocean salmon fishing closure may end up making for better river fishing stories this year, with fewer being taken out there, more will be taken inland. Jack Duncan is one of the many sponsors of the Fish-Works website and one hell of good fisherman to boot. We encourage our visitors that hire guides and charters to throw their support behind those who support our site. Thanks for the report and the photo Jack, congrats on your early success, let's hope it's a sign of good things to come this year.

Here is a photo of a nice Springer caught by Bob Cowling according to Larry Moore. Larry says that the photo was sent to him by Bob Pittman and that they regularly fish with Bob Cobb who is standing in the background, how many Bob's can there be in the world? :) If going fishing with a Bob improves my chances, I'll have to my buddy Bob a jingle and see what he has going this weekend ! Mister Cobb are you keeping the good fishing a secret?

Nice fish, more evidence that the springers can be found if a guy or gal wants to spend the time to find them.

Hi Scott  another great day on the big pond. We had a super group of seasoned fishermen today we all had a blast over the bar a little after 7am and back in at noon with 16 lings and assorted bottom fish  take care and tight lines.

Capt Rick  Salmon Harbor Charters

Hello Rick, looks like you're keeping you're guest plenty glad they decided to take a day on pond with you. It sounds like the bottom fishing has been really good this spring and the great weather we are having makes it even better to spend a day out there. I have waiting patiently for some more reports on the river fishing but not much reported the past couple of days. Well there you have it folks, if you want to stock the freezer with some great ling cod and assorted rock fish it looks like now might be the time to get it done.

Thanks for the Report Capt. Rick, as always we greatly appreciate it. Tight Lines until I hear from you again.

For Immediate Release Wednesday, April 26, 2006
Trout harvest limits will increase at Diamond Lake

ROSEBURG - The harvest limit for trout at Diamond Lake will increase next month to encourage anglers to catch as many fish as possible before an intensive netting operation begins in mid-July, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials announced today. The netting will target thousands of pounds of larger tui chub, as well as any remaining trout, in preparation for the department's September rotenone treatment of the lake.

Beginning May 13, anglers may harvest 20 trout per day with two daily limits in possession and no size restrictions. All fishing at Diamond Lake will be closed from Sept. 5 - Oct. 31.

"We really want anglers to help with this special fishing mission by catching as many trout as possible," said Dave Loomis, Incident Commander for the Diamond Lake Restoration Project. "This will be a bonus angling opportunity with several large trout available to be harvested."

ODFW is releasing 20,000 catchable-sized trout once the lake is ice-free in mid-May and another 4,000 prior to Free Fishing Weekend on June 10-11. With this limited stocking and holdover trout from last year, Loomis expects about 40,000 catchable fish will be available to anglers this year.

ODFW recommends people stay off the lake until it thaws because the ice is unstable. Once the ice melts, bank and boat fishing will be available. However boat access will be limited because some of the boat launches will be dry. The U.S. Forest Service may lengthen one or two of the docks to provide public boat access.

With the lake level lowered in preparation for treatment, the canal and weir at the north end of the lake are visible, and anglers are reminded that fishing is prohibited within 200 feet of the weir. ODFW also reminds anglers that they still need an angling license to fish during this season.

The large-scale fish netting operation is scheduled to begin in mid-July to remove as many fish as possible before the September treatment. The operation will be conducted only during weekdays on different sections
of the lake, so impacts to anglers should be minimal.

Hi Scott, Fished with Joe, Art & Mike today.  Played more poker than we caught fish!Did manage to put this 25 pounder in the box early in the morning though!  Caught her on an anchovy and spinner rig. Take Care,
Rod Lathrop

Hi Rod, not a thing wrong with that day fishing, we always wish we had caught a few more. A nice day out on the river with friends and a nice shiny Springer to boot, that is what its all about. From that look you have that look on you're face you must have won the poker game! Thanks for the photo and report. From all the info I'm getting the Springers are starting to pile up pretty good around the mouth of the river in Windy Bay and there should be a bunch on them running the gauntlet over the next few weeks.

Hi Scott   Sunday April 23rd, went to the reef with 6 customers today we had to work for them today. The ocean had a big drift and we had the wind to deal with. Over the bar at 7:30 am back in at noon with 13 lings and assorted bottom fish, 3 weeks to halibut season I think I will be ready. Also their was 2 Chinook boated at the can today, marked a lot of fish at 65 ft all the way down to the reef. tight lines Capt Rick  Salmon Harbor Charters

Howdy Capt. Rick, thanks for the fishing report. It sounds like the bottom fishing has been pretty hot this spring, the wind is always a challenge with the big pond. You're guest had to be pretty pleased coming in loaded with a boat load of fish. I hope the weather and water cooperates with the Halibut fishing this spring. Things have been warming up and getting nicer ever day recently, if we stay on this trek even us fair weather fishermen will have a chance to get out and do some fishing. Good to hear about the Chinook to, it lets us know there are still plenty of them still outside the bar that haven't started the run up the river yet. We have some reports of increased activity with the river springers but still a little touch and go. If you're looking for someone to take you out Halibut fishing, Capt. Rick just put a brand new 38' Boulton with twin Yamaha 250's in the bay this year. Dependable and fast transportation to the fishing grounds, you won't waste you're whole day going out an coming in and will get more fishing time instead.

Scott, Today my wife Peggy and myself fished Springers, we managed to get a nice 15lb. Chinook........Here is a picture of both. One is better then none. It is starting to pick up. "Tight Lines" .Bob www.cobbreelfish.com

Now there you go Bob, I heard  that if you took Peggy with you she would show you how to catch them again. Ok now that you got you're Springer refresher course under your belt you should be off and running for the rest of the season now.  Thanks for the report and photos, it reminds me what a beautiful place we live in, and that catching fish is just a bonus that comes with a great day on the river.

Happy Trails

04/20/2006

Mr. Moore, I finally have a good Springer report.  Yesterday I fished with two of my good friends, we each landed a fish!!  This year has really been tough getting hooked up, we have been lucky to get a fish, let alone three in one day!!  Anyways, I just wanted to pass this along, with the picture to prove to you we really did get three fish.........keep your line tight,  Bob

Mr. Cobb, there is something "Really Fishy" about this report, sometimes you just have to laugh cause it hurt's to much cry. Things are looking up though, I think everyone will start producing some nice catches over the next week. The darn salmon need to get a watch so they know when it's time to come home.

Tight Lines to you Buddy, I hope you catch a bunch this next week.

04/20/2006

Hey Scott , Had a great day Springer fishing yesterday. My fourth day fishing, got three the first
day , got skunked the second and third time and got five yesterday. Fish ranging from 17 to 25
pounds. Out of the eight only one wild the rest beautiful hatchery fish. Yesterday helped to keep
my daily average up. Last years average was 2 1/2 per day. Hope I can maintain that this year.
Never Know ! Sure could use a few more folks that want to catch springers!!! Pass the word if you
would. Thanks Jack

jack@JD-anglingadventures.com  www.jd-anglingadventures.com

Hey Jack, it sounds like you are on to something there, the springers have been threatening to take off any day now and it looks like persistence is paying off. This will be music to the ears of a lot of anglers who have been waiting for some indications that the run is underway. Well you all heard him, time to break out the rods and get with it. If you are looking for a guide Jack does one heck of a good job, along with all the other fine guides on the Umpqua river. You might visit his site and give him a jingle, he checks his email when he gets a minute to catch his breath so the phone is your best bet.

Thanks for the Updates Jack, let's see some of them pictures so we can add them to our website.

04/19/2006

Hi Scott,  another happy group with their limit of ling cod ,this family is from central California they were with me last season for salmon and returned for some bottom fish. We got over the bar around noon and were back in 3pm. We also we marked a bunch of salmon at the mouth of the Umpqua River. You river guys get ready they are on the way soon this mud in the water will help a lot. Capt. Rick Salmon Harbor Charters

Hello Captain Rick, it looks like you're keeping you're guest busy reeling them in this year. I hope you're right about the Springers coming up river pretty soon. Sounds like maybe a trip over the bar might prove to be a worth while venture for those of us with sea legs anyway. I appreciate you're reports and pictures. I'm looking forward to getting in some Tuna time with you this summer.

Keep up the good work!

04/19/2006

Hi Scott,
Been catching and releasing LOTS of BIG Smallies on The Umpqua in waits for the Springers to arrive in earnest. Ripping crankbaits through any place you can find with no current. Make sure to let them go so they can continue to keep the sqawfish population down!

Thanks,
longtime reader first time reporting <"{{{<><
Todd Harrington www.fishinglivingwaters.com  Todd@fishinglivingwaters.com

Hi Todd, thanks for the report on the Smallies. There doesn't appear to be anything small about them at all except maybe their mouths. I'm all for keeping the squawfish population down, but you have to admit that a plate of fresh bass filets, dipped in a good  batter and deep fried in butter, sounds awfully tempting. I might have  to keep one or two :).

It looks like we need to focus our spring fever and fishing sites on something other than springers for a day or two. I can feel it in my bones, those springers will be making their charge up river any day now!

04/19/2006

Well the reports don't lie, while the salmon hasn't been anything to write home to mom about, the bottom fishing has been outstanding for those brave enough to venture outside the bar. Many good reports of bottom fishing activity this month. there are a lot of keeper Ling Cod are showing up at the docks. So if you have fishing fever, you might want to try you're hand a this we wait on the salmon run to get up a head of steam this year.

04/19/2006

Salmon fishing on the Umpqua River has still not really gotten up a head of steam yet this year. As a kid growing up in eastern Oregon, I can remember my dad always wanting to wait until May to come over to the coast fishing. His rational was based on fishing trips he took with his dad when he was a kid. If you came fishing in April you might get there before the run and would come home empty handed. Funds for coast fishing trips were pretty limited in his family of nine so they wanted to make sure they had the best chance of success and would come over in May. It is amazing to me how much smarter my dad gets the older I get.

Everyday I get up and check the email hoping to see some positive reports from our site subscribers and lately those reports have been few and far in between. I know from experience that any day now things will take off and I will be hard at work trying to get everyone's reports posted. When it rains it pours. Keep a stiff upper lip, keep your hook in the water, and sooner than later we will see tight lines and bent rods all over the river.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife

Umpqua River , Lower and North: Spring Chinook fishing should be good this year as an estimated run size of 8,000-12,000 fish is expected. Spring Chinook fishing declines as warmer water temperatures and algae blooms occur. Fishing in the North Umpqua River for spring Chinook began as the first fish passed over Winchester Dam on March 22. Anglers will have great opportunities to catch the expected run this year. In addition to spring Chinook, shad and small mouth bass provide for good fishing from April through October. The Umpqua shad run typically starts in late April and continues through June. This run provides excellent fishing opportunities from Sawyers Rapids RV Park to River Forks. Smallmouth bass fishing from Scottsburg to River Forks on the main-stem Umpqua and in the lower South Umpqua should be very good.

Coos Bay , Coos River , and Lower Coquille River : Striped bass, shad, and sturgeon are available for anglers in the spring. Both green
