Scott,
Here is a picture of my last Sturgeon trip of the year for the lower Willamette. We managed 3 keepers in the 44” to 46” range and one big daddy that weighed in at 65# and was 60” on the nose Sunday 05/25/08. The sturgeon fishing was pretty good this year we had lots of days with multiple keepers. My buddy Steve Sluder hooked this monster and handed it off if you can believe that, to another fisherman on my boat JD Geisler who had yet to land a keeper this day. I am pictured with the fish unfortunately however I can not claim it as my own so good job Steve and JD.
Love your sight this is my first post. I haven’t seen very man reports so I thought I would send you one.
Also on another note we did really well on the Sea Bass and Ling Cod out of Newport Monday and Tuesday 05/26 and 05/27 just south of the jetty. Sorry I don’t have any pictures of those trips.
Thanks and keep up the good work.
Tim Bolton
Hello Tim, beautiful sturgeon you have there. Nice way to wrap up a final sturgeon fishing expedition for the year. As you can see the reports have been a little scarce this spring so yours was a welcome site. The Willamette has produced a lot of nice sturgeon this year. I have posted photos from other guides in their individual websites recently as well.

Hi Scott,
These are some pictures of some springers that were caught about two weeks ago on the umpqua river. These people are all friends of mine, so I thought I would share their success with you. We were fishing in a hog line, we caught several fish the week these photos were taken. Probably a good thing since the fall salmon fishery is up in the air. I sure love your sight and good fishing to you. Thank you for all of your hard work!
Tracy Williams
Hi there Tracy and once again thanks for the belated fishing report. I have had a few folks email me the past week regarding the lack of reports for Spring Chinook this year. I and many others have witnessed a good number of nice fish being taken on the Umpqua. My personal observation has been that there is no lack of good fishing on the Oregon coast this year, instead I think we have number of people who are wanting to keep it a bit of a secret so that the word doesn't get out about how good it has actually been. Well the word is out, there are a good number of fish being taken daily and if you want to get in on the action then my advice to you is don't sit around waiting for someone to tell you it's getting good. Grab your boat, your pole and your fishing buddy and get on over here and get in on some great fishing. Bring your camera along and when you do hook up, don't forget who pointed you in the right direction and send me a couple of photos and a report.

Hi Scott,
My son Greg and I went out Saturday on a beautiful ocean and a gorgeous sunny day chasing halibut with Wayne Butler from Prowler Charters. Wayne is a top-notch guy and put us on some very nice halibut. Here is a picture of Greg holding two that tipped the scale at 35 pounds each. Thanks for a great site.
Guy Glossop
Hi Guy, looks like halibut is what a few have been chasing after recently. Looks like you guys did alright for yourselves out there. We are happy that you enjoy visiting the site and hope you will continue to share your reports with all of us whenever you get a chance to get out there and do some fishing.
5/15/2008
Hi Scott,
Dad caught another nice springer on the umpqua. It has been a much better year so far. Good fishing to you!
Tracy Williams
Hey there Tracy, what a beautiful fish. Not too many catches being reported right now but seems some are being taken. Great that you and your dad could get out there and chase them this year. Thanks for thinking of us and sending in your report.

Hi Scott We were already today to attack the Halibut but the weather changed on us about a hour before departure from dock so we went pink fin perch fishing up river in the 38ft boat our customers had a ball we landed over a 100 perch in 3 hours and ended up with 7 limits.
Tight Lines. Capt. Rick www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com
Hi Rick, I guess when one thing doesn't work you have to improvise and try another. It looks like you did a great job on that today. That is a nice looking bunch of pink fin. There isn't anything in the ocean that taste quite as good as these fish do if they are prepped and cooked right. I'm glad you're playing it safe with the weather this year. It's been a wild spring and there is no sense in taking chances, lots of good fishing days to be had around the corner. Thanks for your report, they are always appreciated.

Hi Paul, great looking sturgeon, that is my old stomping grounds up there on the Columbia. The Columbia and Willamette have both produced a ton of nice Sturgeon this year at least that is a conclusion I would draw from the reports we have gotten from up there the past couple of months. Thanks for taking the time to sit down and pencil out a report for us to read. Tell Ron congrats on his fine catch too.

Hi Scott.
The Lucky Duck was at it again on Friday, we were fishing Newport again.
Fishing was slow but we managed 3 for 3. The ocean was very nice, we even saw some bait jumping. The fish weighed in at 40, 22, and 45. Kelly and Mike are good deckhands.

Hi Scott, nice to hear from the "Lucky Duck" crew. That is a nice looking catch you guys brought back in. There are still a few good days of Halibut fishing left this year if the weather cooperates and the winds don't beat us all in off the big pond. As always, thanks for taking the time to send us your report, double thanks for sending them in from the Newport area, it will give me a new post for that section of the site too :).

Hi Scott Out on the big pond again today, very slow bite drift changed several times today giving our customers a lot of trouble finding the bottom and the Halibut we did manage to find this 92 pound bad boy.
Captain Rick
www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com
Wahoo! Captain Rick does it again :). That fellow looks pretty proud of his catch. You might not have caught many today but the one you did put in the boat was certainly worth writing home about. If the weather reports hold semi true this week you should have some better days ahead. We should start seeing some Salmon reports start pouring in before too long I would think. Looks like your going to have to take a mandatory break until next Thursday, when they let you start chasing them again.

Hi Rick, that is one big Halibut the fellow on the right is holding up there. I think that be the biggest one reported so far on Fish-Works this year. That doesn't discount the others, but it sure makes it's size apparent and impressive. I hope the weather continues to improve and that ocean fishing opportunities continue to present themselves on a more regular basis for you guys that earn your income out there. As always, we appreciate getting you're reports.

Hey there Captain Rick, what a great looking catch you guys brought back in from this trip, I'm envious. Remember to leave a couple for the rest of us. In all sincerity I'm glad to hear you managed to get out and get some fishing time in. The weather seems to slowly be making way for summer and hopefully lots more days of great fishing. Thanks for keeping all the folks here at Fish-Works in mind and sending in you're report.

Hi Scott, the Shad fishing has been pretty good, Salmon fishing is slow to non-existent, we are starting to pick up Smallmouth Bass with a little more regularity as well. If you are planning to make reservations with a guide for fishing this summer, now is the time to get it done. The closer we get to summer the more difficult it will be to find openings.

Hello Gary,
you're right, the
fishing has been
pretty slow this
spring but it's
starting to pick up
in all aspects. The
weather is starting
to act allot more
like summer lately
so that may help get
the party started.
You are also right
about the guide
booking however.
When the fishing is
slow it's always
easy to book a trip,
once the fishing
takes off, that
whole picture seems
to change almost
overnight. I know as
a kid growing up in
eastern Oregon that
we made our fishing
reservations for the
following year
before we headed
home from the
previous years
fishing trip just to
make sure we were
all set for the
following season.
Now that I live here
I have all my own
gear and boat, but
as a younger man is
was allot more
economical to hire a
guide and use his
gear instead.

Hey there
Scott,
Fishing out
of Bandon on
Friday, May
18th out of
Bandon with
Bob Pogue,
we boated a
limit of
fine halibut
ranging from
25 to 48 lb.
The bite was
fast and
furious with
all four
fish boated
in less then
2 hours. The
ocean was a
bit choppy
but not
uncomfortable.
We are
looking
forward to
our return
trip soon.
That halibut
is yummy and
tastes even
better when
you have
reeled it in
from four
hundred feet
down.
Sending you
the pic of
the 48 lb.
fish.
Thanks' for
your
informative
site and
keep on
fishing.
Tony Rogers
Hello
there Tony,
thanks for sharing
your catch with us.
That is a dandy fish
your holding up
there, it's one of
the bigger ones
reported caught last
week. It looks like
last Friday was the
day to get it done,
if you were going to
go after Halibut,
the winds kicked in
Saturday and made it
pretty tough for
anyone to get back
in if they did go
out, so most just
called their trips
off and decided to
fish another day. I
appreciate the fact
that this report
comes from down in
the Bandon area, I
am trying to expand
the reporting this
year to cover all of
the Oregon coast, so
every report I get
for areas outside of
the Umpqua and
Winchester Bay help
move that process
along.

Hey ya Scott,
First I wanna
say my prayers
go out to those
families that
lost someone
over the
weekend. On
Friday May 18th
my friend his
father and I
went out of
Newport for a
halibut trip.
It was such a
wonderful trip.
The bar was a
bit snotty at
daylight but the
ocean smoothed
out nicely, for
awhile. We got
out to the
Banana hole.
The 3 of us
dropped our
lines in.
Within 2 minutes
of hitting the
bottom I had a
nice halibut on,
before I could
get mine up the
other two people
on the boat each
had one on. We
were limited out
on the first
drop. We stayed
out and waited
for a friends
boat to limit
out and it
wasn’t long.
They had 4
halibut on at
one time. When
your 25 miles
from land it is
always nice to
have a buddy
boat to travel
with you.By
9:30-am we had 9
limits of
halibut across
two boats.
Ranging from 37”
to 55”. They
may not have
been the biggest
but they’ll keep
us happy till
next trip. It
was a great
experience.
While traveling
across the ocean
as the sun came
up 2 large
whales surfaced
about 20 yards
from the boat
blew some what
in the air and
played on the
surface. It is
days like this
where you feel
truly blessed by
god. It also
makes you
realize how
small you really
are in the grand
scheme of
things. Always
remember folks
the ocean may be
flat but that
can change real
fast. I know
life jackets can
be abit
cumbersome and
uncomfortable.
But I’d rather
deal with that
then fall over
board without
one on.
Shawn Chase
Hi Shawn, it's been awhile since we heard from you. Friday was the day to get out there and get it done with halibut fishing. I was all set to go on Saturday but the weather forecast ran me off. I heard on Friday the ocean was pretty nice headed out of Winchester but then a system moved in between the halibut and the coast making it a slow roller-coaster ride back in. I lived up in Montana for 15 years and when I get 20 or 30 miles out to sea, it's about as close to being back in Montana as I can find around here. There is something very calming about being out there alone with nature, it kind of puts everything back in perspective. Great job on the fishing, looks everyone will be chowing down on Halibut till it's coming out their ears :). Thanks for keeping Fish-Works in mind and sending us your report. Your one of the smart ones to keep a life jacket on out there, I went overboard a couple of years ago in the river and discovered I'm not 21 and bullet proof anymore so I am a lifejacket convert as well.

Safety....Safety....Safety.....!
Ok
folks after reading
through a series of
news articles from
this weekend I felt
like maybe it might
be a good idea just
to take a minute and
remind everyone that
while boating and
fishing may be a lot
of fun it can also
turn deadly very
quickly if you are
not prepared and
alert.
We lost a few boats off the Oregon coast this weekend, in most instances, while the physical boats were lost, the passengers survived, not all unfortunately. Check your weather reports and tide tables. The Coast Guard is a good source of information, however I think you will find the Charter Captains will follow their lead and will usually be even more concerned with their passengers safety than the Coast Guard. if your a recreational fisherman, I would recommend you check in with an ocean charter company before heading out and see what their plans are. If they are staying home, you probably should too.
Double check all your gear, make sure your radio is working, put your life jackets where you can get to them in a hurry if your not going to wear them, make sure the fire extinguishers are full, make sure you have fresh flares.
All said and done let's all double check ourselves and try to be careful out there, we want to keep getting your fishing reports for many years to come.

The Lucky duck had a great day fishing on Friday. We fished our favorite spot out of Newport. 5 fish, 21, 25, 39, 50 and this 79 pound pig caught by Don Pearse. The ocean was a little rough but the fishing was outstanding. Saturday was a bust no fish. We will try again next week.
Scott
Hi Scott, you are one "Lucky Duck" , very nice! I had to laugh when I saw the cooler, I started to load mine in the car yesterday morning and then had to stop and ask myself why? If I did catch anything it wouldn't have fit anyway :). I threw my tarp in instead but all for not, we opted to cancel the trip Saturday because of the weather forecast . It's always better to be overly safe than terminally sorry, we will all be around to share fishing stories for allot longer. Thanks for sending us your report, that 79 pounder is a beautiful fish.

Hi Scott,
I got lucky today on the Santiam. Caught these two feisty 7 pounders.
They may not be very big but they sure did put on a show for everyone. Each one jumped multiple times and made several runs on me before I could land them. One 10 pounder did get away while being netted. Had a fun morning but had to quit due to a broken reel.
Later and thanks for managing this site. I think it's great.
Sunny
Hi Sunny, thanks for the report, I truly enjoy running this website, fishing is a lifelong love affair for me and my job keeps me on the computer and off the river allot more than I would like, so I manage to stay on top of fishing by adding the reports everyday for everyone else. It looks like the Santiam might be a good bet for salmon fishing right now, it's been super slow around Windy Bay and out on the big pond for Salmon recently. When it finaly takes off it should be wild.

Hi Scott,
My brother Randy, friend Jeff Mason and I went Halibut fishing Friday and Saturday. Fishing was great. We caught our limits both days with fish up to 40 pounds. The first day we caught them all on chunks of shad; the second day we caught them on herring. Sure am looking forward to ocean salmon season getting going now that the freezer is full of halibut(!).
Tight Lines,
Rod Lathrop
Hi Rod, it's been awhile, great to hear from you. I was hoping to get out and chase Halibut today but eh weather reports scared me off the ocean. It looked like it might have been a smooth ride out but the afternoon forecast was looking pretty rough this morning so we called it off and stayed home. Looks like those with a little more courage than me made did pretty good :). Those are great pictures, we get a chance to look them over from both sides. As always thanks for thinking of us here at Fish-Works and sharing your reports.

A federal judge today found charter boat captain Richard J. Oba guilty of recklessness in the 2005 deaths of three passengers near Winchester Bay and sentenced him to six years in prison.
Oba apologized to his victims and the lone passenger to survive - Jim Parker - and said that he never intended to cross the Umpqua Bar and was blind-sided by the 17-foot wave that rolled his boat, the Sydney Mae II.
But Oba, bowing slightly as he read a statement before U.S. District Judge Ancer Haggerty, said he was consumed by the "awful burden" of ending three lives.
"I am truly sorry for the loss," he said. Oba pleaded guilty in January after maintaining his innocence for more than a year. Government prosecutors recommended a sentence of more than four years, but Haggerty gave Oba a longer sentence. The Sydney Mae II capsized Sept. 19, 2005. The U.S. Coast Guard closed the Umpqua River bar to recreational boats, directing Oba to take his passengers to Charleston. Other fishermen watching the seas that evening warned the skipper that, with plunging breakers reaching 16 feet, the bar was too rough to approach.

Hi There Captain Rick, I'm glad to hear you finally managed to get out on the pond and get in some fishing time. I know the weather hasn't been very cooperative so far this spring, but the forecast are looking a little better for the next few days anyway. Too bad your anglers couldn't keep the Lings, it sounds like you would have limited everyone with them. Keep up the good work and I hope we start getting a lot more reports from you now that the weather is starting to settle down and cooperate with you for a change.

Todd Harrington www.fishinglivingwaters.com
Hi there Todd, I'm always happy to get fresh fishing report to share with the other readers here at Fish-Works. We are all anxious to start hearing some positive reports. We don't get Turkey photos too often so I thought we would throw that photo in the mix to, thanks for sharing them with us. The weather has been getting a little bit nicer with every passing day, I just hope that the better weather eventually equates to some better fishing too. It usually does. The Springer season this year wasn't anything to write home to mom about. The weather forecast may even allow for a little fishing on the big pond this week, I'll be interested to see how that works.
