Hi Scott

Amy & I fished Windy Bay today (Saturday) with Tom Dragoo; beautiful day, lots of bites, 4 fish to the boat, no keepers, all native Coho. We did put crab pots down on the way out, brought 20 nice crabs home with us for the pot. It will only get better from here!

 Rod Lathrop

Hi there Rod, I was wondering when I was going to hear from you again, it's been a little while. Glad to hear you two are getting out there and chasing the fish around for us.  The bright side and consolation prize for today was a big plate of fresh Dungeness crab and that's not exactly a big disappointment. Thanks for keeping us in mind and sharing your report, as always it's welcome and appreciated.

The Lucky Duck fished out of Florence on Saturday. Great day, ocean was nice, and the fish were hot! Water was 60 degrees, found the fish in 160 feet of water, a little north. They were on the top 40 feet. We caught 8 Coho, and released 20 more, lost that many more on the way to the boat.

First salmon for one of these gals.

Kudos to capt Rick for his timely reports. It keeps us folks in the valley foaming at the mouth.

Scott

Your fishing over here in my stomping grounds now :). I had a couple of friends out there this weekend that said the fishing was pretty good, lot's of Coho and managed a few keepers out of the bunch. It's steadily improving, we just have to stay with it and be there when it kicks into high gear. Thanks for sending us your report, as always its greatly appreciated. Captain Rick is a big helper with this site, he has consistently sent reports into us from Windy Bay, there would be some pretty short report pages without him these past couple of months.

Hi Scott Out on the pond again today hooked about 15 fish today but all except these 2 fin clipped Coho were wild fish and were returned  We did manage to hook a couple of undersize Chinooks today maybe a sign of things to come.

Hey there Rick, thanks for sending in the report, no matter many or how few fish were caught its all good. I'm sure your guest went home happy to have made the trip, there was plenty of fishing action and he put a couple of fish in cooler to boot. Not bad for a day at play. I'm optimistic that things will continue to improve steadily as we merge further along into summer. It won't be too much longer before the salmon start stacking up in the Umpqua. Thanks again and keep us posted.

Great website.  Spent five days fishing out of Newport, 6/22-6/26, halibut fishing was really good at south end of  the rock pile, we released 8 between 30" & 38" in 2 hours and kept  39 @ 40 on Saturday, the ocean was like a pond. The bait is thick outside and we got all the fresh herring we wanted jigging in the bay.  Salmon fishing was excellent at 135-140 feet just north of the whistler as we had numerous drive bys, released 50 plus Coho with extra fins and kept 12 salmon, 8  were beautiful Chinook in the 26" range.  Caught a few lings to round off a nice time.  Tight Lines.

Mark Z.  Roseburg

Hi Mark, man is sounds like you guys made out like bandits out there :). Sounds like you happen to be in the right place at the right time. I imagine a few of our readers will be hooking up the boat and heading for Newport this weekend. That is one of the most productive salmon reports we have had this year so far. The Chinook have been far and few between with not much size to them so far this year, the reports on the Coho's are steadily improving and it looks like it could be pretty productive over the next few weeks for those who are willing to get out there and chase them around a little. Thanks so much for sharing your fishing report, as always it's the readers and contributors that make this a great site to visit, all I do is post the reports.

Hi Scott,

We made our first tuna run Wednesday out of Winchester. Cast off at 05:15 and ran due West until we reached 60 degree water, about 43 miles, and trolled out to about 47 miles. Put in and got hooked up while my thumb was the drag checking how far back the jig was. We boated a decent 16 fish, lost four, fished almost 5 hours. We're still figuring out this tuna business, it's awesome! Had several doubles and triples! The ocean was splendid. We'll be heading out again on Sunday.

Keep em' tight!

Richard

Hello there Richard, this report is music to my ears, I haven't gotten an Albacore fishing report submitted to Fish-Works since the fall of 2005. I know there aren't many charters that are going out that far for them anymore, and most of us have smaller boats and don't normally venture out that far. They are a lot of fun to fish for, all kinds of rod action when you do hook up with them and the meat is delicious. Congrats on the success and I hope you have many more productive trips. Thanks again for the great report!

Hey there Rick, sounds like things are steadily picking up. So when we going tuna fishing? I had some friends catch a few Coho's out off of Florence today in about 220' of water as well. They said the same thing, the ocean was nice and calm. I hope things continue to improve. Call me if you decide to go out and chase the tuna for a day or two :).  Thanks for the report.

Hi Scott   Things were slow again on the pond today, But each day we are marking more fish and landing more Coho we had 6 hooked today had to release 4 and landed these BBQ fish for this young  angler great job I think he's hooked also. we also are catching more Crab in our offshore pots each day . Tight Lines.  Capt. Rick  www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com

Hi there Capt. Rick, now these are always my favorite reports to post. I guess it brings back some great childhood memories of days spent fishing with my dad. Those might seem pretty small to us, but I'm sure he was happy as could be with his catch and proud to show them off as well. I was down to Winchester Bay today, you were out there chasing fish, it was a beautiful day to be on the water, now if the fishing would only cooperate just a little more. As always thanks for sending us a report this way.

Hello Scott,

 6/22/07

Three of us fished Friday evening out of Charleston, we went south to the "glass house" and caught 4 Lings (only 3 were legal), and 4 blacks...pretty good for just a couple of hours fishing. The weather was beautiful, ocean calm and we even got to see a couple of whales. I attached a photo of Jackie with her limit on Lings.

 6/23/07

Saturday morning, four of us fished out of Winchester Bay for the Coho opener. We hooked a total of 4 fish, landed 3, but could only tag one 25" Coho.  Pretty slow....we pulled our gear and headed in at 12:30 pm. Pretty good weekend overall, especially since the Beaver's won !

Thanks for running the web site.

 Brian

Hey there Brian, I'm getting allot of two-fer reports this week, very much appreciated. Sounds like the bottom fishing panned out a little better than the Coho fishing but things are starting to shape up and there should be some much more productive days just around the corner. I saw a whale breach close in to shore just north of Florence yesterday on my way up to Newport, pretty cool to see. The Beavers win was nothing short of spectacular with back to back championship titles. Yeah Beavers :).  Thanks for sharing your report with us.

Hey Scott-

 6-21-07

My grandpa and I fished out of Coos Bay.  We got a late start and the tide was running pretty fast, so the drift wasn’t very good.  I switched up from my usual 2oz jigs to an 8 oz and was able to tap the bottom every now and then.  Lots of fish hugging the bottom but we only got one to bite.  A 24” Cabazon.  That was probably the worst bottom fishing I have seen in along time.  We search all over from Baltimore rock, Simpson's, and a few other no name rock piles towards whiskey run beach with very little success.  But at least we didn’t get skunked.

 6-23-07

Grandpa, Uncle and I went out of Coos Bay looking for some Salmon.  We put in around the whistle Buoy off Coos Bay and got one Coho right off the bat in about 300ft of water, to many fins though.  We kept getting a lot of shakers, Mackerel, and with Capt. Rick's reports of some fin clipped Coho being caught up toward Winchester we hauled in our gear and made about 25knots all the way up there.  About half way there we went over a pretty good school of fish.  With no one around other then a commercial Trawler we decided to give it a shot.  We had 3 drive by’s over about 30mins then the skipper had to come back and show us how to reel in a fish.  He reeled in one very nice Coho, but it to had to many fins and back into the drink it went.  We had a couple of more on, but none of them made it to the boat.  Then all of a sudden the bite dropped off and even the commercial guy started heading out to deeper water.  We picked up our gear and headed North.  Found a lot of boats just North of the Twin Knolls so we put in and drove around with everyone else without a bite.  So we waited about an hour and headed home.  There was a lot of bait out there, more then I have seen in quite awhile.  Hopefully we will get a good summer of salmon fishing out there.  When we got back to port there were only a few other boats that had gotten fish and most of them were out 100ft deeper then we were, around 400ft.

Thanks again for the great site

Shawn

Hello there Shawn, It's folks like you who take the time to share your fishing reports that make this a great site to visit. You guys really worked hard for the fish you did get. I'm hearing all kinds of positive indications of things starting to shape up for a little better fishing this summer than what we have had this spring but then it wouldn't take to much to improve on that action. We are starting to see allot more boats in the water the past week or so, usually a good indication that things are warming up. We should start seeing more reports this week.

Hey Scott, Fished out of Bandon the last two days for bottom fish.

6/22 - Relatively calm conditions w/ little drift.  Started out fishing deep w/ jigs w/ little luck.  However, plenty of blacks feeding on the surface.  Switched to ultra light steelhead rods and lures.  Landed our limits in a half hour.  Big fun!

6/23 - Thought we'd go for a repeat... not to be.  More swell, faster drift, no surface feeding action.  Spent about an hour or so... only three blacks.  Plenty of fish showing on the fish finder... suspended top to bottom.  What a difference a day makes!  Checked in w/ folks in the afternoon...sounded like the bottom fishing was slow for everyone today.

 Phalarope

Hey there Phalarope, two for one fishing reports, thanks for sending them our way. We haven't heard to much from down around Bandon this year so your report is doubly appreciated as well. It sounds like you have the right approach to fishing, if one thing isn't working try something else until you find something that is.

Hi Scott  Last day out on the big pond for Halibut for a couple of weeks hooked 10 but boated 8 today for the cooler. Capt. Jim from our office went out with another group of our customers and had one Chinook and some Coho action today he also checked the offshore Crab pots and had 17 large legal Crabs things are looking up good job Capt. Jim  Tight Lines.  Capt. Rick  www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com

Hi Rick, looking good, nice bunch of halibut you brought in today, everyone looks like they were pretty happy with the trip and the catch. It is also good to hear that a few salmon are starting to be caught. The Chinook fishing has been really slow this year but the Coho fishing is starting to show a little more promise. The salmon and crab combo trips are starting to shape up. Thanks for the report.

Hi Scott    Blue Bird weather out on the big pond today, hooked 6 Halibut only landed these guys , made 32 knots on the ride back in today just a little under one hour travel time, hope things hold for Saturday fishing trip.

Tight Lines.  Capt. Rick  www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com

Hi Rick, glad to hear you had a successful day of halibut fishing. You have a few more days ahead to chase them guys this year and it looks like maybe the weather is going to cooperate with us for a few days too. Always nice to have the twin 250 Yamaha's for getting out and back from the fishing grounds. Keep us posted on how things go.

06/21/2006

Hi Scott  Great day out on the big pond today, hooked 7 Halibut today but only boated these 2 bad boys one was 70 pounds and the other was 61 pounds  this father and son team from Idaho gave us a lot of joy to watch them brag about their catch today the rest of the family went along to watch them in action what a great group of customers they will be back next year for sure. Tight Lines.  Capt. Rick  www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com

Once again you came through with some monster halibut for you clients. Those guys holding them up are not little fellows and the halibut make them look small :). There are lots of great steaks in those two bad boys. Great job there Skipper and thanks for the report. If it weren't for your reports this past month the page home page would look like old mother Hubbard's cupboard. I'm sure this next week when folks can start keeping the Coho's we should see an increase in report activities.

06/20/2007

Hi Scott   Boy what a day, double trip today started out with a Salmon crab combo trip with our customers from Idaho, no Chinook but a lots of action on the Coho Salmon Crabbing was only fair but the legal crab we boated were huge We put our pots outside in the ocean a little north today, ocean is starting to warm up after several days of wind. The pm trip was up the river for pink fin we boated 90 today. kids had a blast and sore arms for everyone. Starting on Thursday we go long range for Halibut, Friday and Saturday also and then back to Salmon and Crab on Sunday. Tight Lines.  Capt. Rick  www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com

Hi Rick, I'm hoping you and everyone else start having a little better luck with the ocean fishing here pretty soon. We are in the middle of June, it's time for the ocean to start settling down and letting folks get out there and catch a few fish. Looks like there is no sense going pink fin fishing, you already caught them all :). Keep us all posted on how your halibut trips go, I always love seeing the pictures of your folks coming back to port with big fish and big smiles.

Hi scott. We hit the Coos on fathers day for Sturgeon and went 1 for 1. This was a real treat and really made the day one to remember. Pictured from left to right is Jack Strong, me, (Jake Masterfield), my father Charlie Masterfield and my father-in-law Jim Hackney. We plan on going back this weekend as well.

 Tight lines

 Jake

Hello Jake, thanks for sending in your report. Great way to spend a fathers day, I'm sure your dad and father in-law appreciated spending the day with you as well. The sturgeon was just frosting on the cake. I spent my fathers day with my grandson catching crawdads and water dogs, he's not old enough to go out fishing yet but we won't waste any time getting him used to walking the streams :).

Hi Scott   We almost had to go to plan C today crabbing in the river , not a sand shrimp to be found in the port we had to go to Coos Bay and pump our own this morning , so we went back to plan B and landed 101 pink fin our customers and packed their ice chests for the return home trip to the mid west.

Tight Lines.  Capt. Rick  www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com

Hi Rick, once again an impressive haul of Pink Fin. I'm sure they had visions of 50lb Chinook Salmon or 100lb Halibut dancing in their heads when they headed for the Pacific Ocean but were content to go home with a boat load of Pink Fin instead. I remember years ago coming to the coast to charter out and getting shut down because weather conditions didn't permit. I wish the skipper had a plan B back then, after driving all that way to go fishing a day out reeling in these guys as an alternative would have been great. I'm sure they had a good time and appreciated your creativity. Thanks for the report, as always, it is greatly appreciated.

06/14/2007

Hi Scott   Had to go to plan B today since the bar was on the fritz again most of the day we did get over the bar for a Salmon trip on Wednesday and caught 8 Coho four of them were fin clip, no Chinook and we had to return all the Coho but next Saturday that will be a fish in the box, our group today landed 75 of the pink fin and they had a ball with a lot of good eating fish to haul back home.

Tight Lines.  Capt. Rick  www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com

Hello Captain Rick, your plan B seems to be working out pretty well for you and your fishing guest. While we would all prefer to hear reports of salmon and halibut, there isn't a thing wrong with a boat load of sea perch. I have gotten lots of email from people asking where, when and how to fish for Pink Fin Perch, following your reports. I just told them to stop by your fishing supply store there in Winchester Bay or over at the Crab Depot and ask you or your staff for the details :).  I am glad to hear that Coho fishing is picking up and once we can start keeping a few of them, I'm sure we will see more reports pouring in.

Scott

06/12/2006

HI Scott  no go for the ocean today the bar was nasty so we went to plan B again and landed 120 pink fin in 21/2 hours up river our customers from  Arizona  had sore arms but  they will have a great fish dinner tonight.

Tight Lines.  Capt. Rick  www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com

Hi Rick, if I didn't know any better I would think you are the only one out fishing this spring. We are gonna have to jump start a few of these other guys into sending in their reports too once in a while. It looks like plan B is working out pretty good on those bathtub ocean days. It looks like the weather is getting nice again and will hopefully give you a few days on the pond here shortly.

Scott

06/07/2007

Hi Scott   Back out on the big pond again today , only landed five on the trip drift was a little mixed  and the wind was a factor late morning other then that we got back in in one hour and ten min not bad.

Hey there Rick, I'm always impressed with the halibut photos, they are beautiful fish and they taste better than they look. I'm glad to hear you guys were able to get out there and made a great trip out of it, bringing everyone home with an arm full of fish, good job Skipper.

06/07/2007

We did real well on Pink-fin Perch until Saturday, 6/2/07 and then Sunday, 6/3/07 the bite virtually went to zero up the river.  Where are they and when will they be back?  I have been talking to Dennis at River's End Guide Service and he has been super helpful about the Pink-fin fishing.  Hopefully, Fish-works will get some postings on the Pink-fin fishing.  Your web-site is a lot handier for information than having to make a phone call to Reedsport and Winchester Bay.  Thanks in advance for any info.

Dave Jackson
Roseburg

Hi there David, glad to hear that you did well, I had another reader here at Fish-Works, that went over pink fin fishing and he said the day he got there the fish had left the river. I have only fished for them on the surf so I couldn't be much help on fishing the river for them. Denny Sherwood is top drawer in my book and is very knowledgeable about the Umpqua River. He grew up fishing it from the time he was a kid and probably knows just about everything there is to know about it.

Hi Scott  Salmon fishing was very slow today out on the pond we released one Coho fin clip and landed this 25 inch Chinook for the BBQ our clients from Utah, enjoyed the ocean and the sun that we had for a couple of hours this morning.

Tight Lines.  Capt. Rick  www.salmonharborcharterfishing.com

Hi Rick, I don't think it will be much longer before the Salmon fishing starts to get allot better. The second half of June on through the end of summer usually. We're about due for a good strong run, it's been a couple of years since we had a really good one. I'm sure that 25 incher will taste just fine on the BBQ. Did the kids go along or did they just meet up with dad for the photo on the docks?
