Hi Scott!
My buddy and I took the Tia Maria out Friday for a shake-down salmon run. First time chasing them, trying to figure it out, how deep, where to fish, etc. We separated from the fleet and fished 300 ft water about 50 to 70 feet down and nabbed 3 nooks and a clipped silver, sent a few others back as well. We're happy with that day! Then Saturday made another tuna run, and we really had to work to get 13 on board. First 5 fish were 22-23 miles out, the rest at about 40 miles. Awesome ocean both days.
Keep em' tight!
Richard
Hi Richard, it looks like you got he salmon fishing figured out pretty quick with 3 Chinook and a Coho. I suspect you did your homework before you got out there:). I have yet to make it out for Tuna this year but I am glad to hear that you ran into them at 22 miles out, that is getting closer to my distance limit in a smaller boat. Friday and Saturday were the days to "get er done" this weekend if you wanted to fish on the pond. Sunday proved to be wash tub. I guess it was a real circus at the Siuslaw bar, with boats going out and 10 minutes later heading up the river with white knuckles. Sometimes I wonder if the Coast Guard doesn't leave the bar open just to see who is crazy enough to give it a try.

Hi Scott,
Fished the big pond Saturday. dropped the crab gear at 7:00 am and went out to 300' and dropped in, 2 Blue Sharks, 2 Chinook and 5 Silvers later we were limited and headed back in to check our crab gear which provided us with 16 keepers, all by 9:00 am
Tight Lines to all
Robert
Hey Robert, good to hear from you. It looks like you did pretty well for yourselves out there Saturday. I heard Sunday, that a lot of folks headed out but then ended up coming right back in because things were pretty rough. It looks like you picked the best day of the weekend for your venture out on the big pond. This warmer water seems to be magnet for the blue shark this year, I don't recall seeing them in this close and in the numbers we are hearing about recently. How big were the Chinook? I am curious to know if they are putting on any weight yet, most reported have been pretty small so far this year. It's still early and we could see some big improvements the further along into the season we get.

Hellos, Scott.
First time report. My wife and I are the calm weather fisher people type. We went out yesterday morning at 8:15 and were back at the dock at 10:15 with our limits of Coho. We only caught five with one native fish. All were between eight and nine pounds. We were at 310 feet using cut plug herring straight out from the mouth of the jetty. Lots of people. Some were catching, some weren't. One of the nicest days on the water we've had this year. A couple of Orca's came by the boat. I was in Alaska last week salmon and halibut fishing and it was good, but yesterday out of Winchester Bay was as good or better then anything I had up North. Looks like the wind is going to blow the rest of the week. Just a side note. We were listening to people on the radio while fishing yesterday and were laughing about one report of a sea lion and a shark getting into a fight over the salmon. Would have loved to have seen that one. Didn't here who won that one. Great web site. keep up the good work.
Thanks, Mark Carter
Hi Mark, thanks for sending us your report, as you will continue to read, we had a glitch with our email server and missed some reports so if we are a day or two late getting you posted I hope you understand. I'm with you, if isn't about as flat as a lake out there I don't want much to do with the ocean either. When it is calm it is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. I wonder who would have won that fight between the sealion and the shark. It could be a toss up, no pun intended..hahahaha!

Hi Scott,
Saturday's ocean was lake like out of Florence and limits of Coho were plentiful. We found our fish at 240 foot water depth and caught all fish near the surface. Hooked 27 fish, released 7 wild Coho and kept 4 nice sized hatchery fish. Fish were striking and releasing from downrigger, jumping high into the air and spitting the hook. Fun to see them dance on top of the water but disappointing when we couldn't play them to the boat. We enjoyed another crab dinner with ten keepers in four pots on a three hour soak. Lots of female crabs yesterday compared to last week when we had very few. Dropped pots north of jetties in 30-50 foot water. Bait used yesterday was the mackerel we caught last weekend.
Tight lines,
Gary and Karen
Hi Gary and Karen, hopefully you got my email explaining the delay in your post. I really appreciate all of you who take the time to send in your reports and try hard to keep things up to date but sometimes things just don't cooperate. It has been one of those weeks :). Anyway we got your report posted. Great to hear about the crabbing. I got my trim motor parts in today and should be in the water pretty quick here myself. You two take care and have fun.

The Lucky Duck
fished out of
Winchester today, we
found these 2 in
300-320 feet of
water, a little
north. It had been a
while since I fished
Windy bay. Ocean was
beautiful, fishing
was ok. We dropped
the crab pots in
about 50 feet of
water, a little
south. After a few
hours soak we
managed about 10
legal crabs per pot.
WOW. Several jumbo
sized.

Hi Scott, that name has a nice ring to it doesn't it ? I apologize to you for the late post you have probably read already that I had some problems with my email server, but think I have it working ok now. You seem to have a pretty nice seafood spread there in coolers. I guess if you got a great day on the ocean and brought home some kind of catch, then it's been a great day. Thanks for keeping us posted and thanks in advance for your understanding about the delayed post.

Hi Captain Rick, it looks like we finally solved the mystery of the missing reports this morning. Not sure where they went the first time around but they are here now. I know the weather has not been all that cooperative the past few days but wondered why we hadn't heard from you after the 27th. It seems every time that the ocean gets stirred up with the northern winds that it takes a day or two for everyone to get their bearings straightened out. You will do better the next few trips out unless we get more of the same.

hey scott : finally had a decent day to skip work and go fish- went out of the Siuslaw today. great bar and ocean.. we ended up with 3 Coho in the box average sizes.. and lost three with a couple of misses.. great day on the big pond...most all the fish we caught out about 200' line and 25 ft down.... we'll try again tomorrow out of windy bay--seems like the fish are kind of scattered
Terry Sullivan
"The Sea Hunter"
Hi Terry, well it may not have gotten posted right away but it did eventually get posted. I'm really glad to hear more people posting reports from Florence, the Siuslaw and near offshore fishing in the area. On a really nice day the bar is still very passable and the fishing pressure usually isn't as heavy as it is down at Windy Bay. The winds have been the biggest challenge of all this year, not a whole lot of days to play on the ocean with the closed bar and high winds. I suspect it will get a lot of calm fishing days as we enter into August and then September

Hi Rick, you are the first report I have had in a few days so you're not the only one who got chased off the ocean. It looks like it took you a little while to figure out where the fish were again after giving the ocean a few days to stir things up for you. Hopefully the sunshine and clear skies the next few days will equate to some good fishing opportunities for you and everyone else.

Hi Captain Rick, I can't tell you how much I appreciate the consistent fishing reports we get from you here at Fish-Works. I know that the guides life is a really busy one this time of year with trying to run two store fronts and the charter boats I sometimes wonder where you get all the energy. In any event it looks like once again you did a great job and sent everyone home with a limit of Coho's in the cooler. I heard the ocean was a real rollercoaster yesterday, but I know you well enough to be confident that you would be back at the dock a long time before it got to rough out there, limit of fish or none.

I got a chance to go fishing with one of my grandsons, brought him down from Camas Washington and we spent the day drifiting the Umpqua with Lyle Andrews Guide Service. For me it was a good day and a bad day, Lyle and I are friends from high school and we got to catch up a little which was the good part and then the bad part I got out fished by my grandson. He caught and average of 3 fish to every one of mine, he also go first, most, and biggest and last which was really great. The fishing was not "RED HOT" but we still managed to boat somewhere between 30 to 50 fish with the majority going to my grandson. The weather also played a good part as it was cloudy most of the day and even though it was warm it was not sweltering hot, that is until just before we pulled out and then that sun was like a branding iron. Aside from the fishing, we also got to see some Osprey, a Bald Eagle, lots of river turtles, Blue Heron, a Black Tailed doe, some Peoples and a dog who came and swam around the boat, you cannot get a better day than that. I am going again with Lyle when it is time to fish the sixes, besides being a friend he is also a pretty good guide and takes care of his clients.
Hi Chuck glad to hear your still out there stirring up the waters. You just can't beat a day on the water with one of your kids or grandkids. 20 or 30 years from now when he is sitting out on the river with his son or daughter he will be remembering the days he spent out there with old gramps ;). thanks for sending in your report and tell your grandson that Fish-Works congratulated him on his success on the Umpqua.

Hi Scott...an
update. Tested the
limits of my
seasickness
yesterday. Friends
called us while we
were cruising
Oceanfest and gave
up 10 minutes to
meet them at the
boat. We're totally
unprepared, but up
for a challenge,
right?
So I downed 1/2
Meclizine, feeling
brave. The bar was
closed to 16ft, and
it was rough. About
6-8 foot swells,
which were scary to
me! We had a great
time, the bites were
coming faster than
we could bait the
lines!
At one point my
friend had something
big on, either a
tuna or perhaps a
big Chinook. Bit
through the line and
got off. We limited
out in about 1 1/2
hours. Again, I got
a nice Coho, about
11#.
All through this, I
was a little green.
Took a second
Meclizine and had my
relief wrist band
cranked up to high.
I about kissed the
boat when we turned
in...another 5
minutes and I am
sure I'd been
chumming (urp).
Sorry no pics,
didn't have time to
grab a camera!

Congratulations Kathy, not everyone gets completely past the whole sea sickness thing and it's nothing to be embarrassed about if you have to use various aids whenever you go out, lots of people do. It sounds like with each trip you are getting more comfortable with it and who knows some day you may venture out with no aids and be perfectly OK. The big thing that grabbed you line and cut it might very well have been a blue shark, with the warmer waters they have been moving in closer to shore. I have heard others report seeing them in as close as 3 or 4 miles offshore. It looks like you had a great day fishing as well, limits all around in an hour and a half is pretty productive catching I would say. Thanks for sharing your report with us and keep us posted on how your summer on the big pond progresses. :).

Hey Scott the warm water is back at Florence and consequently most of Saturday's fish were Mackerel instead of salmon. The ocean was simulating a Maytag, the salmon we brought to the boat were "wild" but the day was saved with a limit of crabs. Four pots dropped south of the jetties in 30-50 foot water produced a dozen nice crabs in a two hour soak. Oh, the Coho have been putting on weight fast as these released fish were much larger than the ones we kept two weeks ago.
Tight lines,
Gary and Karen
Well now I can't say I have had a catch photo like this in awhile, but it's very refreshing, what a great spread. I'm glad to hear the size of the salmon are increasing, some of them could pass for trout in fresh water. The great crabbing helps make up for the little guys your reeling in and turning loose. I thank you very much for your report and sharing your dinner with us.

Hello Rick, short, sweet and to the point. I looks like the Coho are being very cooperative the past few days. I'm glad you were able to stay busy with the Halibut fishing being cancelled out and everyone seems pretty happy with their haul from the big pond. Time to get rested up and ready for a new week of fishing, the weather forecast over the next few days looks like it carries some promise for better seas, provided we don't get a blast of wind with the clearer skies.

Hi Scott,
Fished early morning Friday the 20th on the Umpqua between the 101 bridge and buoy 25. Picked up three fish. All were small nook's that we returned, but there are fish in the river. This rain might bring in some more fish. We did really well this time last year.
John & Sherrie
Hi John & Sherrie, I'm so glad to have gotten your report. I was just down through Reedsport the other day and was crossing over the bridge and took note that not too many boats were out on the river. I have started fishing the rivers allot more and the ocean allot less the past couple of years so I'm always glad to hear some positive results for that section of the Umpqua. The greater majority of the Chinook that have been caught this year didn't have much size to them. The run is not expected to be as large in numbers or size this year as compared to some recent years but it should still prove to be a pretty productive season. Thanks for thinking of all of your buds here at Fish-Works and sending in your report.

we had to cancel
our Halibut trip
today because of

and a strong

by fishing for

Hello Captain Rick, I figured you would manage to keep squeezing in the salmon trips if the morning forecast would allow you to get out and back in safely. With those twin 250 Yamaha's you can make pretty short work of 5 or 6 miles when the first signs of rougher weather appear. Good job on the Salmon , it looks like everyone go to go home with their limit. It's too bad that you had to cancel out the Halibut trips but an ounce of prevention is always more valuable than a pound of cure.

The lucky duck took advantage of a nice ocean and warm water to try our luck at the tuna. WOW!!! It is everything they said it would be and more. With the help of the Salty Dogs, out of Newport, and a 40+ mile boat ride, we got into a great bite. I think we had a triple on 5 different times. Very fun day, we filled all of our coolers with a few to spare.
Scott, Monty, Don, and Matt
Hi Scott, glad to hear you guys made it out and back safely. That is a long ways out there but the pay off can be fantastic as you are now well aware. I love fishing for tuna, they can give you every bit of the fight that a big Chinook will give you and in some ways even more. When the tuna bite is on the action can be so hot that it's comical to watch. My last time out there I kept handing my rod off after awhile because I was exhausted from reeling them in, we brought 48 of them back with us that day. There were 6 of us on the boat so I got to take 8 of them over to the Sportsmen's Cannery and had enough canned tuna to feed me, and a bunch of friends ands families until the following tuna season. I am hoping the tuna will come in a little closer this summer so I can get after them in a smaller boat. I just won't go that far out in a 19 footer. I know on a good day the ocean will allow for it, I'm just not that brave :). My hats off to you guys though, congrats on a great day of fishing and boat load of tuna. As always, thanks so much for taking the time to send us your report and photo. It's folks like you that make Fish-Works a great place to stop in and visit on the internet.

Went fishing out of Winchester on Sat morning and it was really nice, flat bar and flat ocean. We went out to about the 200 ft mark and started working our way to the boats farther out. We had three hook ups with two in the boat and one keeper in about 25 min. We caught our first fish on a triangle flasher and spinner and the next one a green hoochie with a little bait.
Both fish at about 25 ft. Then the bite died off, the fog came in and the wind picked up. We finally hung it up and pulled the boat at about 11:00 or so and even though the ocean was choppy the bar was flat on the way in. We had GPS and radio and not much was happening and I get a bit on the nervous side when I can not see much for the fog. For what time we had it was great and I am waiting for the river fish to start running. I am selling my 18 ft mariner and getting a 19 Bay Hawk so I can go in the ocean more often.
Chuck
Glide OR
Hi Chuck, nice to hear from you, its been awhile. Great to hear you are out there chasing the salmon around this year. I got caught in a fog bank about 15 miles out a couple of years ago in the late afternoon. We came in really slow so we could hear any other boats in the area and had to place our bets on our GPS. I could do an advertisement for Lowrance GPS's. After what seemed hours of traveling in the blind, another guy fishing with us asked me where I thought we were, I responded that if this GPS were accurate we should just about be at the buoy right outside the jetty, the words no sooner got out of my mouth when I spotted the buoy right in front of the boat, we came across a smooth bar with visibility at 5' using only the GPS, it was a hair raising experience and all your instincts tell you to shift right or left when you hear the waves crashing off the rocks, you just have to ignore it all and concentrate on the GPS screen. We finally broke out of the fog 50 yards up the river and were riding dead center of the river where the GPS said we were. My advise to all of you is to get a good high quality GPS and radio, they are just as important as a good boat and your life may depend on them some day. I figure it's always better to error on the side of safety and live to fish another day.

HI Scott I am starting to get behind on the reports these pictures are from our am and pm trips . The ocean is full of sharks and real close in It's hard to keep them off your line today while your fishing for Salmon but we managed to land a few fish and 28 crab on the first pull even a giant red rock which we have not encountered around these parts for a couple of years.
