I don't normally post reports or articles from other place but this one was an exception it was submitted to us from Ken Smith. The next time you're wading in your third world eco paradise stream or lake, just remember, your place in the food chain may get re-shuffled.  I bet things like this reduces the urge to go skinny dipping.

I would sure hate to run in to this critter at the beach. That is some set of choppers on that guy, hurts just looking at those teeth.

Hi Scott, here is Pat and Jerry Litalien, they were fishing the Umpqua River below Reedsport. Pat caught both Chinook, one 16# and the other 18 1/2#. Jerry was her helper today, they were using a three way with a 8oz ball, using plug cut herring.  Fishing in 25 the 30 feet of water. Pat had a great time, Jerry I am not sure about. He is not smiling in this picture.

Larry Moore :)

Hello Larry Moore, it's been a good long time since we got a report from you, I'm glad to hear your out there stirring up the pot and keeping all them anglers honest down there in Reedsport. We have all had those trips where the other guy couldn't shake the fish loose off the end of their rod if they wanted to and we couldn't get a bite to save our life. It's all in the game of fishing I guess. It was sure good to hear from you on the forum, I might sneak by and talk you out of a cup of coffee  you tomorrow, I'm going to try and sneak out for some deep sea fishing with Captain Rick in the morning so I'll be coming through Reedsport tomorrow afternoon sometime.

Howdy Captain Rick, I was wondering when we were going to hear from you again, it's been a few days, glad to see you back with bang. Tuna and Halibut, hot damn that sounds like some real fun. I'll have to sneak down there and get a day out on the pond with you pretty quick. Those look like some pretty happy fishermen there, I hope you put the Sportsmen's Cannery to work, they do a great job, their canned albacore is the best I have ever tasted. As always thanks for the reports.

Scott, took my kids out on the Siuslaw for a couple hours Tuesday and my 12 year old son, Kyle, caught this nice Chinook. He was a happy kid!

Take care,

Hello Mr. Stockdall, I thought I saw your truck and boat come across Hwy 101 the other day here in Florence, I guess my old eyes didn't deceive me :). That is one really fine looking Chinook you and your kids picked up there Bob, Kyle should take great pride in that guy, there haven't been too many landed this year so that is a double bonus for him. Glad to hear you pounding the waters down here, I'll probably run into you out on the water pretty soon.  Tell Kyle congrats from all of us here at Fish-Works.

Hi Scott,
Since things had been slow in Florence, Karen and I trailered to Winchester on Saturday the 25th and had high hopes of limiting. Nope, it wasn't in the cards for us that day as things were slow for everyone. One fish per every seven rods was the ODFW report that day. We considered ourselves lucky to have each caught a Coho even though they were quite small for late August. Our two fish hit as a double so we got to enjoy the "Chinese fire drill" routine as we got both fish into the boat. We found our two fish in 240 foot water while fishing 37 feet down on the downriggers. We listened to the radio chatter where no one was doing very good near shore so we decided to head west. The further west we went the calmer the ocean became and then when we were out near 360 foot water we saw a shark and then had the time of our lives playing with a pod of Dall's porpoises. These eight porpoises swam along the boat, then under the boat, then raced along and breached at the bow. They were beautiful and obviously using us as a play toy. This made our day. Here's what they look like:

Of course no fishing report is complete without some smiling person showing off dinner so here's our contribution, Karen with her Coho. Tight lines to you and thanks for keeping the site up and running.
Gary and Karen Smith

Hello folks, I was thinking about you this last weekend and wondering if you made it over this way. I haven't heard too much from anyone the past few days and the few folks I have talked to experienced results similar to your own, in fact you did better than most that I have talked with in passing. I guess you never know, some times its hot and sometimes its not. Looks like you made a pretty good day of it in spite of the slow fishing, that really is special to get out there and run into some of the wildlife that lives that far out. It's like a whole new world sometimes. I sure appreciate that you took the time to send us a report and share your day with us. Your right too about the photos adding a little something extra to the reports.

Scott, don't have a fishing report at the moment but I wanted to thank you for having this site.  I check it daily from June - mid Sept.  (deer season) and prob. once a week the rest of the year.  I saw some complaining a while back and just want to say that ANY info about what is going on concerning salmon fishing is great.  I stopped in at Salmon Harbor Charters, (looking for pink hoochies) and got the chance to talk to Rick Mason.  He was more than helpful in showing me what he uses and how he fishes.  (depth, depth of rigging, everything).  He was great.  I have my own boat and was buying tackle, not looking for a charter service but it didn't seem to matter.   Any way thanks again to both of you for site and reports.  I learn something to help me fish smarter on Fish-Works.

Mike Gimse
Roseburg

Hi Mike, it's always nice to get a compliment or two. I'm glad you took time to drop a line and let us know about your visiting the site and your trip to Winchester Bay. That has been my experience with Rick Mason as well. He is a heck of a fisherman but he is like allot of guides I've met, they just truly enjoy fishing and want to share it anyway they can.  He has a pretty nice inventory at the store down there, just about everything you can imagine for fishing the river, the bay or ocean. Hope you continue to stay tuned with us here at Fish-Works.com and send in a report the next time you get out there and catch a fish or two.

Hey ya scott fished isthmus slough and coos river Friday for about 4 hours with no luck.  Saturday we had some boat problems and I didn’t want to send my Mom and step dad home without any fish so we hit the beach about 1 mile N of the New Carrissa.  Had a great time and sore arms after we reeled in about 30 Pink Fin Surf Perch.  We used sand shrimp, and they were gobbling that up faster then we could bait the hooks.  So that made my step dads day.  It’s always nice to have a back-up plan.

 Shawn Chase

Hey there Shawn, you have been getting in some good fishing time this summer, sorry to hear it wasn't a bit more productive with the Salmon fishing. I have a similar situation coming up in a week or two I hope the salmon fishing is a little more underway by then. It's a good thing you had a backup plan and knew where to get them in to some good fishing. That Pink Fin Perch is some of the best eating fish there is out of the Pacific. Sounds like everyone had a pretty good time in spite of the boat problems. I hope you get your boat problems sorted out I know they can be a pain sometimes. Thanks for the report.

Hi Scott,

Spent some time today on the Umpqua at Winchester Bay today (Saturday 25 Aug). Put in at the Harbor and fished the incoming for about an hour then fished the outgoing from Big Bend on down to the mouth.  Had one takedown on the incoming and one on the outgoing up towards the bend (think it's time to sharpen the hooks even if they are new Owners).  Seals were working real hard on up the river but we had a takedown right where there were six seals off the starboard less then 50 feet distant.  Figure it was either dumb luck or maybe we almost had seal steak for dinner ?! I hear they kind of taste like chicken.

There are fish in the river and it's just a matter of timing. Marked quite a few close to the bottom at whatever the bottom was then.  If it was 30'  then the mark was at 28 or 29.  Looks like nookies to me!  There were quite a few marks made between the surface and 20' but I have a new fish finder and can't vouch for what those were. Need to spend a little time on the sensitivity meter. We did see one netted up by the bend so I know for a fact someone caught a fish today!

 Tight lines!

 Lauran Davidson

Hi Lauran, glad to hear you took some time off to go fishing. I am dying to get out and spend a few days on the river, seems like I have had to work harder and play less this year. I just about have things caught up enough to get out there and start chasing them myself this next week. The Umpqua sounds like a good place to get things started. I mentioned in an earlier report that I had saw quite a few boats piled up in the bend west of the 101 bridge there in Reedsport, so I figured the Chinooks must be starting to show up in greater numbers down there. With the price of fuel you know they are not down there sight seeing. I'm not real happy to hear about all the seal in the river. We battle with them every year, I guess they go with the turf. I don't know what seal steak taste like but there are days when I would like to find out. Thanks for your report and I hope you manage to get allot more days out on the river this Summer and Fall.

Hi Scott,

I fished the Siuslaw on Thursday 23rd no fish there yet.  fished Umpqua on Friday 24th 6 inches away from tagging out. lost second fish at boat landed nice 25 pounder. wasn't fishing bait go figure, ha ha.

take care and good fishing

Tim Sorrels

Hi Tim, I just posted another report from the Siuslaw today, it looks like things are starting to pick up all over. I was down through Reedsport and Coos Bay Thursday and saw quite a few boats out working the river in the bend west of the 101 bridge. I know that the Chinook must be in or there wouldn't be that many boats working the river. I'm not a diehard plug cut herring fisherman, I try a variety of methods, what works well one day may not work the next. I pulled a couple of real nice Chinooks last year on the Siuslaw using dark blue HotShots, go figure. Thanks for sharing your report with us.

Scott,

Fished the incoming tide with plug cut herring today and had some luck. Got one real nice one to the boat but it rolled and the hooked popped. We need more experience netting. Had two other drive byes in the area just up river from the barges. My friend landed one by the Siuslaw Marina. We were fishing 6 & 8 oz cannonballs just off the bottom.

Jennifer & Scott Touchette

Alright Jennifer & Scott, glad to hear you were fishing over here in my backyard and better yet that you got a little action. I won't have a chance to get out there and chase them until Wednesday. I can't speak for everyone but I have found the trick for me netting fish is to try and come up from behind and underneath. To often I have watched people go for the head and get the hook tangled up in the mouth of the net and then had the fish break loose. It's almost enough to make you cry when you watch a 40 or 50 Chinook waving his tail at you as he swims away. Another tip I can offer on the Siuslaw or any river for that matter is run a fairly light drag so your fish doesn't break off so easy on the strike, a few straight strong pulls with a light drag will sink the hook in a little deeper then you can tighten the drag up a touch and play them to the boat. You won't loose too many that way. Thanks for sharing your report.

I am sitting here in steaming hot Sacramento dreaming of being up there fishing in your neck of the woods.  I read the reports daily and am happy to read all of the posts.  With terrible runs so far down here on the feather, sac and american this year I have to live vicariously through your reports up there.  I personally welcome any reports detailed or not and know that many of my local friends do as well.  We don't get as much from the ocean details etc. as some of your readers, but we enjoy the other posts, that is why this site has been so great over the years.  I would hate to see the site become exclusionary.  Thank you to all who post here and to the all of those who give their time to provide all of us with this service.  More people are watching than you think.  We are global baby!-Doug in Sacramento.

Doug Orr

Hi Doug, you would be, or maybe not, surprised how many emails I get each year from folks like yourself. I appreciate that so many find enjoyment in reading through the various post provided by our readers, it makes all the work that goes into this site worth while. There wasn't much of an internet before I was able to move to the Oregon coast so sites like this weren't around yet, if they had been I would have probably been logged in every other day trying to keep up with what the fishing activity was and planning my next fishing trip :).  Thanks for you words of encouragement and support, don't hesitate to send us fishing report or two from down your way if things should pick up a little for you guys.

Was fishing the lower bay of the Coos River, when I caught this nice 28 pounder Nook under the North Bend Bridge, using plug cut herring and a dodger.

 Tight Lines,

 Wes Patterson

Hi Wes, always nice to get reports in from other river systems than the Umpqua and Siuslaw. I was just down through Coos Bay yesterday and saw a few boats out working the river, one of those might have been you. I am sure allot of folks are happy to hear about a Chinook being landed verses the Silvers. Don't get me wrong the Coho are allot of fun but fishing for the kings is what I really look forward to every year. Thanks for sending in your report and photo, they are always welcome and appreciated. You will need to fill us in with how you caught it next time ;).

Hi Scott   The bite was a little slow today  ,we worked the north side above the red can most of the morning back and forth from 80ft to 150ft working our bait between 25ft and 40ft of water we hooked 25or so retuned 10 coho and the rest jumped off the hook somehow. We had 9 in the box when we fished but our deck hand lost one over the side while cleaning it on the back deck, we were lucky it was the last one (a crew fish). tight lines Capt. Rick

Hi Rick, those are some great looking Silvers you guys caught there. Everyone goes home with a limit and no one is looking too Green so it must have been a pretty nice day out there. A lot of soft bites out there being reported. Loosen up them drags a little more I guess, till you get the hook set good anyhow. At least your not battling the sharks to get to the Coho. As always thanks for the report, we always look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Scott,
Fished 8-21-07 on Sully’s boat , what a day had 3 boys with us under 12 years of age we put 10 in the box all Coho And let a good 15+ natives go and went through 60 + baits. Fish on all day by the end of the day the boys thought it was time we move to Windy Bay. But after we told them it’s not always like this and that this was one of the 30 days a year you really get to see the sun. They thought we should stay living in Beautiful Central Oregon and just come visit when the fishing is Good. Keep up the site love reading it.

Thanks Jason Neel and Pete Davis

Hi guys, thanks for sending in your report. Glad you had a good time fishing. Sounds like you had some pretty good success. It is always allot more fun when the kids come along. That is how I ended living on the coast. I used to come to the coast as a kid to go fishing and fell in love with the place, 20 years later I decided to pick up stakes and move to the coast for good. Now that I have grown webs between my toes I'm good to go :). I thought the sun never shined on the coast before moving here, every time we came it was raining. I wouldn't trade it for anything after living here for the past 10 years. Come back and fish with us again soon.

Hi Scott  We had to work for them today over night the fish got scattered again , we hooked most of our keepers north of the can in about 230ft of water 40 ft down today, our customers from Roseburg did a great job on the fish today we released over 12 fish a lot of our take downs we never had a chance to see today they spit the hook. We were back at the dock by noon.

Hi Rick, thanks for the report. You might have had to work for them but sure got the job done, I thought I saw a limit all around but then did a second take and saw you were one short, I'm sure no one left complaining :). I took a trip down to Coos Bay this morning to help a buddy pick out a new fishing boat. We passed through Windy Bay on the way I didn't see your boat in the harbor so figured you must be out there chasing them again. Have fun and play safe.

Hey scott thought I would pass along some shark eating tips.  I have heard that to get shark meat tasting the best you need to skin them right away.  If you can’t skin them right away then you should tow them behind your boat backwards.   Oh and best eating shark tip of all is: don’t let them eat you. LOL

Shawn Chase

Thanks for the tips Shawn. On a Tuna trip a few years ago we hooked up with a 4ft blue shark and brought it aboard, it was pretty intense there for a few minutes, they are very aggressive and have a pretty decent set of choppers on them too. If you are going to keep them and eat them your information should prove pretty helpful.  I agree with "Your Best Tip" :).

08/20/2007

Hi Scott,

We went fishing out of Winchester on Friday and Saturday.  On Friday we fished off of the twins in 280-350 feet of water. We picked up one fin clipped Coho and two natives.  The sharks on the other hand were really easy to catch or at least hook for a bit.  We lost over a dozen sharks and landed two.  On Saturday we lost over 15 sharks and landed two. One was a nice sized one!  We only picked up one salmon and it had too many fins.  We gave it up early even though the ocean was nice because we were running out of hooks!!

For those who would like to know more about what other people are doing such as Captain Rick...head down to Winchester and either book a trip or stop by his store and start-up a conversation.  You might even find your self buying the same tackle that he uses from his well equipped tackle shop!!!  Thanks for giving me some tips Captain!!
Larry

Well Larry, I have to admit that this is my first official pure Shark report of the summer. These warmer coastal waters  we have gotten this year have created a whole new opportunity for those of you who who have always wanted to catch Sharks without having to go 40 or 50 miles out to sea to find them. Those are some great photos.  Pretty good size Shark. Be careful if you do decide to play around with these things folks, they can be a handful. You are right about Captain Rick, he is a pretty easy going guy that isn't afraid to point you in the right direction or let you know what's working or not working in the bay or ocean. He is no Greenhorn when it comes to river fishing either, he can run with the best of them in that environment too. Thanks for sending us this report, it's always nice to have something unique like this come our way from time to time.

scott: went out of Florence Saturday picked up 5 nice Coho--released another 4 and lost a bunch that didn't want to hook up--out about 250-270 again down just 25 ' sorry no pictures you know what a Coho looks like!!  still waiting (like everyone else) for the Chinook's.. by the way I think Capt. Rick gives us enough info...a few GPS # 's would be more than helpful at times!!  I look forward to reading his reports --lets us know the fishing is because he is out there almost everyday!!! thanks Capt.!!   by the way where was secret creek again???

Terry Sullivan
THE SEAHUNTER

Hi Terry, I think that was "No Name Creek", that is where all the great elk hunting is too :). Good to hear from you, it sounds like your letting that boat of yours earn it's keep this year, the whole family is going to be eating lots of salmon. We are all waiting and hopeful of a more positive prospect of hooking up with the Chinooks. It won't be too long I don't think before that all picks up both on the Umpqua and the Siuslaw. There are a few Chinook getting picked up here and there already, so we know they are starting to work their way up in a little bit stronger numbers. Thanks for your report. You need to get yourself a nice digital camera to go with that nice boat of yours....lol.

Hi Scott  Sorry about the rain drop on the picture but it was raining hard, today's trip was on the fence it could have gone either way at 5 am I was ready to cancel the trip and spend the day on the beach but my customers wanted to fish real bad and they have traveled along way for this trip so we went over the bar at 7am  at the red can we hooked the first fish in less then 2 min.  after that we fished in about 80 to 120 ft of water back and forth around the cans and limited the boat around 9am our customers did a great job on the catching today.

Hi Rick, it looks like you made the right decision and sent your crew home smiling. Don't worry about the raindrops, everyone knows it rains on the Oregon coast and layers of warm dry clothing should always come with on a fishing trip. You can always take off what you don't need. Nice bunch of Coho there, that one on the left could almost pass for a Chinook :). Scott: : Fished Saturday August 18 at Winchester bay. Caught 3 nice Silvers.  all at around 285 feet almost due west of the   jetty.  The fish were on top 25 feet or less.   Pink hootchies  seemed to  get most of the action.   The shark action was  better than the salmon fishing. We had 5   shark  hits  we  got 2 to the boat and 3  that    broke the  line very quickly.. It was a nice ocean and that made the trip worthwhile.    This is my 4th year fishing  out of  Winchester  Bay and make no bones about it  the Chinook  catching is not near as good at year's past..

George K.

Hi George, thanks for the report. I agree whole heartedly, it has been a pretty slow go this year, especially with the Chinook fishing. The waters have been warmer much closer in this year than what has been the usual and it has definitely thrown a little wrench into the balance of things. You almost never hear of sharks being as close in as they have been reported.  It seems like it has become almost common place in the reports. I'm still hoping for a pickup in the Chinook action over the next few weeks. Everything has been running about a month behind schedule all year so I figure the Chinook runs up the rivers will not be any different.
