5/11/2008 Hi Scott, I got tired of waiting for Spring Chinook to get hot, so I went halibut fishing with Randy last weekend out of Newport. We caught limits both days, but the fishing was kind of difficult. Ocean was like a washing machine on Saturday. Take Care, Rod Lathrop
Hey there Rod, looks like you came up with a good alternative plan. Reports have been far and few between the past couple of weeks as you can plainly see. Sure appreciate you sending this one in. The weather was really nice today so I didn't get home till late and saw it in my email. Decided I better get it added before I hit the hay. Thanks and I hope you get lots of good days of fishing in this year.
4/29/2008 Scott, Hope these photos come through. Just a few nice fish caught this last couple weeks. Steve Turner w/ 21 1/2 lbs (0872), Tim Jones 21 !/2 lbs (0879), Myself with a 23 lbs striper (0880),Richard Chasm w/ 30lbs (0886), Ed Helkenn w/ 27 1/2 lbs (0889),and Jim Dudley w/ 22 1/2 lbs.(0890). Caught a couple other small (12 & 14 lb) fish,but am really having to work for them . The month of May should pick up in numbers if we are going to have a good run. Jack Duncan
Hey Jack, nice looking bunch of fish you and your guest have there. Always nice to see the Stripers, we don't get to many pictures of them each year. I hope your right things continuing to pick up through May and on in to June. Thanks for keeping us in mind and shooting the photos our way.

for all. Lings and
blacks. Crabbing was
poor. Done by 11:00.
It was a great day
on the ocean, nice
weather, fishing and
a great crew.
4/25/2008 Hi Scott, Each year my youngest daughter requests a Father/Daughter Spring Fishing trip for her Birthday. We spent 4 days on the Umpqua in our boat last week for this years trip and this is one of the three fish Amanda boated. This fish weighed in at 43.3 pounds according to the official scales and crew at Springer Run. While the fishing was fairly slow and spotty overall we put 4 fish in the boat over the 4 days with two in the 20 pound range and one 9 pounder to go with the big fish. It was another great Birthday trip for us on the river. Brad Hatley
Hi Brad, what a great feeling that must be that your daughter requested a few days fishing with her dad. I have always thought that was the best part of fishing was the time spent with friends and family. The fish we catch are just extra's. That is a beauty your daughter is holding up there. 4/19/2008 Hello Scott, My wife and I made the trip out to the Oregon coast from Butte, Montana to get in on the end of the deepwater lingcod season. I fished March 30th and 31st out of Depoe Bay on the Charter Boat Kimberly Ann with Captain Richard. The first day we fished shallow water for rockfish and lingcod with full limits of both for 6 people. The top fish of the day was the 33” lingcod I caught in 135’ of water. The next day being the last day of the deepwater season I went out with Captain Richard again to fish a deepwater reef at 575 feet deep. We got limits of large lingcod for 4 people with the largest fish being my limit of 2 fish at 20.5 pounds and 22 pounds. The next day we fished out of Brookings on a private boat with my friend John. Even though it was 4/01/08, aka April Fools day, there was no fooling around just fishing! We had nice seas and ran just north of Brookings over some great structure and managed to bring up limits of lingcod for 3 and several nice black seabass and one large Quillback! This was the first time my wife had caught a lingcod and as you can see she was smiling! You have a great site and thank you for your hard work. Sincerely, Jay Helfrich
Hello there Jay, was sure great to get your report. I grew up in eastern Oregon and then moved to Montana (Missoula area) where I lived for about 15 years. I made several treks back to the Oregon coast for some great fishing over those years and finally manage to move out here and live permanently. Thanks for your report and a little promo for the fishing charter is always good. We hope you can make it back out here again. I get a little home sick for Montana now and then, will be up there this summer for some fishing on the Big Hole River, one of my favorite places.
4/19/2008 Hi Scott, My Dad caught this springer today. He is 87 years young and he really is lucky to be in the boat. Hope more fish come his way. I just love him, and I enjoy fishing with him and my great friend Gary Cave. This fish was caught on the Umpqua river. Tracy Williams
Hi There Tracy, goes to show a son is never to old to go out fishing with his dad. How nice that your dad is still around and active enough to get out there and enjoy fishing the Umpqua with you. Hey guys thanks for the fishing report, it looks like the springers are on the move and that a few are making their way to the smoker. Glad to hear of your successes, it gives all of us motivation to get out there and chase them around. Reports have been a bit sparse this month but are picking up as we go along. 4/10/2008 Scott, Another great day on the Columbia Monday morning. We fished four guys, and by 9:00 AM we had 8 fish hooked, landed 6 and got to keep three. Hi Craig, thanks for the picture and report, those are some nice looking Springers your guest have there. Glad to hear things are moving along steadily on the Columbia, I haven't been up that way in a while. I have heard the sturgeon fishing has been very productive up there this year as well. Hopefully we will start hearing a bit more from the Umpqua here before long as well. Keep up the great work up there, looks like inland salmon fishing may be pretty productive this year.
4/8/2008 Hi Scott, I fished the North Umpqua today(Sunday 4-6-08) and landed two chrome native hens. Both were fooled by orange yarn balls with a spot of cerise and a very small clump of cured eggs. The water was perfect Steelhead green and the weather also cooperated. I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh the fish were this late in the winter season. They must have come in with the last storm; I’m not complaining though. I was by myself, so it was too hard to get myself in the picture. Steve Vannucci

We don't expect that most will come with a professional photographer in tow, we appreciate the fact that you took the time to take a picture and send it with. Dog gone it every time I think the steelhead run is over someone sends in another report and proves me wrong.

The fishing this winter for Sturgeon was great. Here are a few pictures of a group up from Roseburg this last weekend. They fished Springers on Friday and Sturgeon on Saturday. Hello Jack, those are some fine looking Springers, what a fine way to start off the 2008 spring Chinook fishing season those are some beautiful fish. I got to thinking recently that the ocean salmon fishing closure may end up making for better river fishing stories this year, with fewer being taken out there, more will be taken inland. Jack Duncan is one of the many sponsors of the Fish-Works website and one hell of good fisherman to boot. Hey folks, was sure glad to hear from you all. Glad to hear someone is still out there chasing the steelhead around and keeping them honest. I think you might be right though, about the winter run being at an end. All and all the Steelhead fishing was pretty productive for those folks who took the time to get out there and go after them this year. I guess we can start looking for Springers here before too much longer, I have heard whispers and rumors of a few being caught already. Sturgeon fishing should be getting up a head of steam soon as well, it's that time of year as well. Once again thanks for the report and the photo.

Hello Shawn, the reports have been pretty sparse this month, so yours was a welcome site. Sounds like a great way to start out your day. Goes to show that there are fish there to be caught if someone wants to spend the time. Sea run trout can produce some pretty nice action and are delicious on the table as well. I think this year we are going to have to improvise a bit if we want to do much fishing and it sounds like your on the right track. If the weather continues to cooperate and things start to warm up a bit we are all going to want to get out there and play on the water. Fishing for Sea run trout sounds like a fishing trip worth taking. Thanks for thinking of us.

Rick Middleton Hi Rick, been while since we heard from you, thanks for emailing your report and picture. Things have been pretty quite this month in terms of activity, I think both on the water and on the fish-works.com website. My last trip out long range provided me with a great opportunity to whale watch too. That alone always makes the venture worthwhile. I just hear they were getting ready to close it back down here pretty soon, so for those of you who still want to get in on the action, you had better get with it.
